Harvey Douglas Dougherty 19322021

Harvey Douglas Dougherty
1932-2021
On Wednesday, May 12 at the Saint John Regional Hospital,
Harvey Douglas Dougherty passed peacefully with his wife, partner and
best friend of 57 years, Eleanor (Craig) of Bonny River NB, by his
side.
On November 25, 1932, Harvey made his entrance into the world
at his parents’ farm in Knicky Knocky, Quebec (Bury area).
Only a scant few minutes behind his twin brother Herman, the sixth and
seventh of eight children born to the late Russell and Marjorie
(Harrison) Dougherty, the twins were sure to try their
parent’s (and sister’s) patience with their shenanigans. He
was predeceased by his four sisters and two brothers: Carmen, Ethel,
Evelyn, Muriel, Stuart and Herman. Brothers-in-law Don and Vance
Craig, Sonny Frost and his beloved daughter Shelley Dougherty (Taylor)
of Bonny River NB.
Harvey met the love of his life, Eleanor, on a blind date and
he never looked back. He carried his love of woodworking throughout
his life as a foreman at Vilas Furniture in Cowansville, Quebec and
then opening his own furniture refinishing business in Lindsay,
Ontario. Retiring from the business he and Eleanor moved home to enjoy
a slower Maritime lifestyle in Bonny River, NB where they spent the
next 15 years operating the very successful Bonny River House Bed and
Breakfast out of the Craig family homestead. Hosting guests from
around the globe Harvey was well known for his delicious breakfasts,
homemade bread and famous rhubarb muffins.
Harvey enjoyed downhill slalom skiing in his younger years,
bowling, playing bridge, weekly men’s morning out with his
buds and travelling anywhere Eleanor decided they might need to go.
Members of the Presbyterian Kirk in St. George, NB he and Eleanor were
always happy to participate in church breakfasts, fundraisers and
community events.
Left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband, father and
grandfather, his wife, Eleanor (Craig) of Bonny River, NB daughter
Stephanie Murphy of Maces Bay, NB brother Jimmy (Betty) Dougherty of
Bury, Quebec, Cal (Barb) Craig of Bonny River NB son-in-law Jeffrey
Taylor of Bonny River, NB brother-in-law Alan (Mary) Craig, Vance
(Late) Mary Ann Craig, sister-in-law Marilyn (Rod Campbell), and
special family of his heart in Ontario and Nova Scotia.
Three generations of nieces and nephews, friends, neighbors and all
those who knew Harvey to be the kindest, gentlest, calmest,
unflappable soul there ever was. Most especially his only grandchild,
the apple of his eye, his grandson Ashton Dougherty Taylor who will
forever carry the weight of the absence of his
‘Da’ in his heart.
Interment of ashes will take place outdoors at the Second
Falls cemetery on Thursday, May 20 at 2:00 pm. Face masks and social
distancing protocols are mandatory due to the current pandemic
climate. A small indoor/outdoor gathering will take place following
interment at the home of Alan and Mary Craig, St. George,
NB.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations in
Harvey’s name to the Presbyterian Kirk Memorial Fund,
Charlotte County Cancer Society or charity of donors’
choice. Arrangements are in the care of the St. George Funeral Home
(755-3533) 26 Portage Street, St. George, NB.
Dad, we’ll always remember that quiet smile, that caring heart,
that warm embrace, you always gave us. You being there for Mom and us,
through good and bad times, no matter what. We’ll always
remember you Dad because they’ll never be another one to replace
you in our hearts, and the love we will always have for you.
