Hartmut (Hardy) Reinsch
November 7, 1943 – May 21, 2021
After a long and courageous battle with many health issues, Hartmut Reinsch passed away at St. Michael’s hospital with his children by his side at age 77.
Hartmut Reinsch (nicknamed Hardy) was born in Magdeburg, Germany on November 7, 1943, the second son of Erich and Helene.
He immigrated to Toronto with his parents in 1958. He learned the family trade and became a Master Goldsmith. Hardy and his father, Erich and his brother, Manfred opened up a jewellery shop in Toronto. West York Jewellers was in operation for over 55 years.
He will be sadly missed by his four children Marica (Mike), Helmut (Zenobia), Sabine (Jeff) and Helene, and six grandchildren, Michael, Mathew, Tristin, Magnus, Tylee, and Max. He leaves behind his older brother Manfred (Hedi) and his nephew Dennis (Shannon). Hardy was a loving father and grandfather. Hardy’s playfulness and selflessness were never more present than with his family. He had a passion with the great outdoors. Passing on his knowledge and life lessons on everything from how to catch a fish to navigating Lake Temagami, to writing letters with homemade birch tree bark. He had a great sense of humour, he always had a joke to tell with a big smile that made you feel like you were his favourite friend. He took pride in his German heritage. Sharing his own poetry written in German and English, Hardy wrote tributes for paramedics, police officers, nurses and firefighters. That’s how he got his nickname as the Firefighters Poet.
He will be missed by many friends, lots of which have been lifelong.
Due to Covid19 Restrictions there will be a private family gathering. Webcast funeral will take place on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada.
