Harry Munroe

Munroe, Harry Eldon – 93, Springhill, passed away Wednesday, June 16th, 2021. He was born on March 8, 1928 in a farmhouse on the Lower Gulf Shore. He started to work full time at the Springhill Dairy at the age of 15 as well as going to Night School to complete his education. Harry started to work in the Springhill coal mines at age 16 making him a fourth generation coal miner. He was trained as a Dragerman and rescue worker and was involved in the rescue work of both mine disasters in 1956 and 1958. Harry was an elder in the Oxford Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He served in the Militia and RCAF from 1943-1948. Harry was a self taught guitar player, loved country music and wrote a number of songs and poems, some about the mines. He also loved to travel to his camp in Lynn Mountain, a place he owned for over 60 years. He studied Stationary Engineering and later taught it at Night School for a number of years in the Springhill High School. Following the closure of the Mines, he started to work at the Dorchester Penitentiary, and when the Springhill Institution was built he was appointed as Chief Engineer and later as Plant Superintendent. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, and her family; son, Lloyd (Marilyn); grandchildren, Shane, Kristi (Zaheer) Rahemtulla, Keelie (Terry) Humphries; great-grandchildren, Maliyah and Kaden; sister, Jean MacLean; brother, Ian Munroe. He was predeceased by his parents, Ira and Irene (Davis) Munroe; first wife, Harriet (MacDonald); second wife, Mary (Moore), brother, Jim; sisters, Grace Munroe and Helen Irving. A private family memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 27 in MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Oxford.
