Obituary of Guy Layton Allen-Hermanson
It is with great sadness that his family announces the death of Guy Layton Allen-Hermanson of Dartmouth. Guy passed away unexpectedly, after several years of health challenges, at the age of 49 on August 30, 2021. Born in Cold Lake, Alberta, on February 2, 1972, Guy was the son of Janet (Purdy) and the late Major Gerald Allen-Hermanson.
Guy is survived by his beloved son, Joseph; mother, Janet; siblings, Kim (Darrell White); Dawn (Andrew Halpin) and Sean (Beverley Nickerson); nieces and nephews, Daniel, Patrick, Hannah, Kerry, Rosie, Gillian and Edward. He will be greatly missed by his large circle of extended family and dear friends, as well as Joseph’s mother, Leanne.
Family meant everything to Guy – and once you were a friend – you were family. He was our “Guy Smiley”; happy to meet you and genuinely interested in what was happening in your life. He loved to meet new people and would take the time to thoughtfully listen to their stories. He made many friends throughout his lifetime, as a youth soccer and hockey player, through his adventures working in Alberta and Florida, and as an involved member of his community. It was important to him to maintain those connections and stay in touch.
Guy loved to celebrate. He would spend hours perfecting the ice at the Woodlawn duck pond so the entire neighborhood could enjoy a winter skate, adding lights, and sometimes music, for a full community-party feel. He loved Halloween and enjoyed making creative costumes for Joe and an annual elaborate display for the neighborhood children.
Guy was a proud alumnus of Mount Allison University. It was at Mount A that his interest in anthropology developed into his passion for archaeology and learning about the past. He worked for a time as an archaeology field technician and loved being involved with digs and contributing to our collective understanding of the past.
Later, Guy worked as a DJ, planning out every detail to ensure his clients had a successful event. He took great pride in his work and strove to provide an outstanding and professional experience for all.
Most importantly, Guy was a devoted father to Joe and they spent many hours together working on projects and playing games. Guy could usually be found at the rink or the field supporting Joe as a coach and spectator. They loved to watch sports together and were particularly pleased their team, the New York Islanders, had such an amazing season this year. Joseph was Guy’s world and his greatest source of pride.
Cremation has taken place. A private family celebration of Guy’s life will be held at Woodlawn United Church on Saturday, September 18th, with interment to follow. Due to Covid concerns, the service will be recorded and there will be no visitation or reception. To honour Guy, consider helping your neighbour or listening to a friend in need. Donations in Guy’s memory may be made to KidSport Nova Scotia.
