With broken hearts and extreme sadness, our family shares the passing of Gunter Leopold at his home on Friday, September 17, 2021. Lovingly surrounded by his family, he leaves behind his best friend, and wife of 45 years Sharon Leopold (Brown), daughter Crystal (Richard Chartrand), son Chris, and daughter Julie (Richard Woods). Also left behind to mourn his loss are his four grandchildren who he absolutely adored Tylor, Hunter, Adelyn and Grace. Not to forget his fur babies Willow and Pippa, and nine furry grand babies who he loved to give his attention too as well. Gunter was born December 31, 1950, in Bern, Switzerland to Kurt Sr. and Vreni (Wyss) Leopold (both predeceased). His family later moved to Canada where he grew up with his 4 siblings, Gunter being third in line. Kurt Jr. (predeceased) wife Ellen, Karin (John predeceased), Harold (Kathy) and little sister Margot. He went on to meet the love of his life Sharon. After only seeing her once in passing and telling his family that he was going “to marry that little red head”, their forever love story began. He was then welcomed by his extended family. Father and Mother-in-law Elmer & Lenora Neddo (predeceased), Roger (Diane), Doug (Jackie), Jack (predeceased), Bonnie (Martin), Donna (Brian), Darleen (Brent), Beverly (Frank). He leaves behind a large number of nieces and nephews that he also cared for very much. Gunter was known as a dedicated family man. He served his community for over 25 years as a Correctional Officer and shared his time as a Volunteer Fireman for the Cobalt Fire Department. Always showing an interest in everyone he crossed paths with, never judgemental, and with a very kind soul he made many friends through his 71 years of life. He was extremely smart and knowledgeable, if he couldn’t answer the question you brought to him, he would take the time to find it for you. He had many interests including reading, music, movies, electronics, and gadgets oh the gadgets! His famous word “persevere” will never be forgotten by any one of us. We will continue through the remainder of our journey without him, being the best versions of ourselves and continue making him proud. With always remembering to “treat people the way you want to be treated” We will forever hold in our hearts that picture perfect smile, those piercing blue eyes (that never went unnoticed) and never forgetting your gentle hands and extremely kind heart that you shared. We find comfort knowing that you are now at your best once again, catching up with loved ones you have lost along the way, have fun, we will miss you until we get to see you again. Love you forever, and always.
“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory”. –
Dr. Seuss
With warm hugs and appreciation, Sharon and her family would like to take this time to recognize and say a very special thank you to Gunter’s dedicated home care team, PSWs Michelle, Julie, Kayla, Alce, Jeremy, Rebecca, and Tanya. As well, not to go unnoticed is a number of others that cared for Gunter over the last 5 years while he battled Dementia. To his outstanding RPN Shannon, that helped provide amazing care until the very end we are forever grateful to you. Janet, his activity and recreational therapist, thank you for making Thursdays so very special and fun for Gunter. If it had not been for all of you sharing your outstanding talents, care, empathy, and compassion for Gunter he would never have been able to remain in the comfort of our family home. A Celebration of Gunter’s Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Rec Therapy program, Sudbury, ON, the SPCA and or Pet Save.
