A giant oak has fallen. Gordon Allan Mears passed away on October 10, 2021, at the age of 88 years. Gordon was born in Nuneaton Warwickshire, England on December 21, 1932, to Charles Henry Mears and Elsie May Davies. Gordon married Sheila Lawton on September 6th, 1952, in Nuneaton at Attleborough Church of England. Gordon and Sheila met at a dance hall on a Saturday night. Gordon was 16, Sheila was 17. They have been together ever since.
Gordon is survived by Sheila (Lawton) and children; Carol Anne (Rick Orr), Keith (Nancy Gunnlaugson), Kevin (Carrie Smallwood), Colin (Peter Sweet) and Kim (Kevin Cornelius). He is also survived by 14 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren.
Gordon was an Air Cadet and learned to fly at a young age. He served in the British Airforce for two years; 1949 to 1952.
The Missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints came knocking on Gordon and Sheila’s door with a message of the Restored Gospel Of Jesus Christ in 1955. They joined the Church shortly after. Sheila was carrying their second child, Keith. They developed a great love for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. With a desire to have a better future for their children, they emigrated to Canada. The year was 1957.
Gordon found employment in Toronto then Montreal as a Machine Mechanic. He found better employment in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1959. The family traveled to Winnipeg on the train, a two-day journey. His employment took him into the real estate industry, where he eventually worked for the Province of Manitoba as a Property Appraiser until his retirement.
Family was very important to Gordon and Sheila and they wanted the children to see extended family and experience the country they grew up in. So, in 1969 they took a second mortgage on the house to pay for a month long trip around the United Kingdom and again they went to the UK in 1974.
In the 1970’s Gordon recognized that the St. Vital community did not have youth community Soccer which he felt was important for his children. With other members of the community, he a was instrumental in organizing the Norberry Community Club Soccer league where he coached a team for several years and started/coached the first “All Girls” soccer team.
Since joining the Church in the 50’s, Gordon dedicated his life to serving the lord through various callings. As a Branch President he was involved with the planning of the London Avenue Chapel in East Kildonan. He also had roles in the Mission Presidency and High Council, but he felt the most important role he ever had was his calling as “Home Teacher”. He ensured that every month he went and visited his members to bring spiritual thought and support.
Gordon loved music and learned to play the piano at a young age and continued playing for pleasure until near his passing by taking lessons from his Granddaughter.
Through his diverse life Gordon always strived to be a good example to his family and friends. He lead by example and held himself to a high standard.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated by the family.
