Obituary
It is with great sorrow we share the passing of Glen at the age of 76. Glen is survived by his wife Rose and daughters Tammy and Wendy; his brothers Victor and Edward; and sisters Alice and Kay; and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
After Glen finished school, he worked on the oil rigs as a roughneck, a driller and then a toolpush. It was then he decided to go more into mixed farming, working on the rigs only in the winter time. Glen also worked with the local veterinarian at one time. Mixed farming meant grain, cows, quarter horses, heavy horses, pigs, sheep, all kinds of birds and purebred Border Collies, German Shepherds and lately Bullmastiffs and English Mastiffs. He used the sheep to train the Border Collies for at least 30 years. The children always had puppies to play with.
Glen would often hitch up the horses and give rides to kindergarten children, 4-H kids and families at Christmas time. He often would groom the George Lake rodeo grounds with his team, chariot and harrows. He would showcase his Border Collies by moving sheep and/or ducks. It was a site to see the family’s horses and the neighbors taking part in the cattle drives, which were miles long. Glen has also won trophies for calf roping and team roping.
Glen was also a rope maker. From dog leashes to tow ropes, in assorted colors, he would make rope for anyone that wanted ropes, if they would help him.
Glen was also an avid hunter. He supplied his family with wild game, until the last few years when he was not able to hunt any longer. Now you never know what you will miss until it is gone.
Glen was pre-deceased by his son Evan; his dad George, his mother Katherine, little brother Roy, and sisters Anne, Nancy and Mary.
The family would like to thank Dale K at the Athabasca Community Chapel for providing assistance to us. A great big thank you to Dr. Schaub and the entire staff of the Athabasca Healthcare Centre for their wonderful, caring support to Glen and Rose. You are so much appreciated, as are the Westlock Hospital, Royal Alex, University Hospital and the Cross Cancer Hospital.
As per Glen’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will not be a funeral but in the summer we will gather at the river to spread his ashes.
If desired, donations in Glen’s memory can be made to the Cancer or Heart and Stroke Foundation or AHS Auxiliary in Athabasca OR one of your choice. God Bless you all.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Glen George Markowski October 6 1945 December 13 2021 (age 76)..
