Gilbert Pearson 1935 2021

Obituary of Gilbert Pearson
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of a one of a kind man, Gilbert Otto Pearson on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021. After a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s, he died peacefully with family by his side at Lee Manor in Owen Sound. Gil was born on December 14th, 1935 in Fairview, Alberta. He was the loving father of Teresa Pearson and proud Opa of Jacklyn and Madison Pearson. He is survived by his brothers, David Pearson (Marie), Theodore Pearson (Pearl) and his half-brother, Rick Boyle. Predeceased by his loving wife of 33 years, Helga Pearson (nee Schmid), his parents, Henry and Eva Pearson, his siblings, Vern Pearson (Margaret), James Pearson (Rosemarie), Allan Pearson (Pat) and his half-sister, Orma Hoskin. Gil’s first job was bringing firewood inside for the local restaurant when he was 5 years old for a nickel a week. Thus began a long work history which included building grain elevators throughout the Prairies in his teens, 7 years in the RCAF in munitions, driving cab in Toronto, working at Garrett Manufacturing and a distinguished 25-year career with IBM. In his “retirement” he had 3 different businesses, doing sailing charters, home renovations and installing security systems until he was almost 80 years old. Gil loved sailing, reading, the outdoors, gardening and learning. He always strived to be a better human being. His pride and joy were his granddaughters, Jacklyn and Madison. He attended every recital, competition and graduation with such pride, dressed in his finest. Opa will be so missed. As a Dad he was simply the best. His love was unconditional. He shared his interests in the outdoors, love of animals, gardening, reading, baking and so much more. He was a great listener. His gift was time – one always felt he had all the time in the world for you. Among many things, Gil will be remembered for the permanent twinkle in his eye, his fantastic mustache, his kindness, being a true gentleman and the best Dad and Opa in the world. Heartfelt thanks to the staff on 4-6 at GBHS who cared for Gil for 6 months until he moved to Lee Manor. Words cannot begin to express the gratitude felt by Gil’s family for the way in which each and every person at Lee Manor treated him. Gil was treated with love, dignity and respect throughout his 4-year stay. He could be a handful as he was often busy trying to get to Mexico and staff were so creative and kind in supporting and caring for him. Thank you to Dr. Van Zyl also known as “The Big Guy” for his care and compassion. Cremation has taken place. As per Gil’s wishes, there will be no service. The family will be taking his ashes home to Peace River country at a later date.
Arrangements entrusted to the Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, 250 14th Street West, Owen Sound, Ontario N4K 3X8 (519) 376-7492.
