Obituary
We wish to announce the sudden death of Gerry on Thursday, April 15, 2021. He left us after bravely coping with the severe effects of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis for 13 years.
He was born June 13, 1940 in Calgary and lived most of his life in the City that he loved. Gerald was the third child of Victoria and Joseph. He is survived by his wife Laurie (Durand). They were married August 24, 1963; his daughter Cathie Luciani-Cox, her husband Matthew Cox, and grandchildren Gianna and Martin; his daughter Donna, husband Todd Zmetana, and granddaughters Megan and Chelsea; sisters-in-law Mel Luciani, Penny Ott; Laurie’s siblings Catherine and Bill Dacyshyn; Rose and Pat Matsuoka; and sister-in-law Shirley Durand who were all very special to him. Gerry felt fortunate to share his life with many terrific nieces and nephews and their families which brought him great joy. Predeceased by his parents; brothers Gilbert and Sylvio Luciani and their spouses Mildred and Lee; Laurie’s parents Agatha and Leonard Durand; siblings Mavis and Rayford Johnston; Adrian Durand; and many extended family members.
Gerry graduated from St. Mary’s Boys School in 1958 and joined the Accounting firm of Munn, Richards, Yeoman & Co. where he articled for 5 years and became a Chartered Accountant. Gerry’s places of employment as Controller included The University of Calgary, several Broadcasting Stations, and Automotive Dealerships in Calgary and Vancouver. He was happiest as an Entrepreneurial CA (CPA) and enjoyed his clients of which many became close friends. Gerry was always willing to support people in their business ventures and helped many through difficult times. Gerry was proud to be a part of bringing Calgary Crime Stoppers to the City, the first chapter in Canada. Being a native Calgarian, he was a huge fan of The Calgary Stampeders and The Calgary Flames.
We would like to thank Gerry’s Family Doctor- Dr. A. Agbi for always being there for him. Also Dr. Kerri Johannson and Kirk Mathison RN of South Health Campus Pulmonary Diagnosis Unit who supported him whenever we needed them and is instrumental in setting up our IPF support group meetings. Thank you, Pat Meadows for your friendship, uplifting emails, coffee gatherings and picnics at your cabin all which Gerry enjoyed very much.
We would be grateful for donations to cpff.ca Thanks to all the great staff at The Manor Village at Fish Creek Park. For the past two and a half years Laurie and Gerry have enjoyed living there.
There are no services. A Celebration for Gerry’s life will be held later.
