Fitzgerald, Gerald Joseph Sr.
Guysborough, age 97. It is with deep sorrow and much
love that we announce the passing of Gerald Joseph Fitzgerald Sr. on
Monday, February 8, 2021 at the age of 97 years, in the Milford Haven
Home for Special Care, Guysborough.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend
Mildred “Millie” (Flavin); his children, Sandra (Cameron),
Judy both of Truro; Tim, Boylston; Gerald Jr. (Rose), Guysborough;
Pamela and Angela both of Halifax; as well as 12 grandchildren and 9
great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, James and
Elizabeth (MacIsaac) Fitzgerald; brothers, Ed, Robert, Huey; sisters,
Margaret, Mary, Hazel, Winnie, Theresa and Ruby in infancy. He will
now join his first-born son, Kevin and beloved son-in-law, Gerald
Sullivan in heaven.
Gerald was born in Queensport in 1923 and grew up during the
depression years. As a young man his adventures took him across Canada
working in various camps. His return to Nova Scotia saw him enlist to
serve Canada during World War ll he fought bravely, with the Royal
Hamilton Light Infantry across Europe.
After the war ended, he met and married Millie where they
began their family in Halifax and eventually settled in Guysborough.
Gerald was a great sportsman who especially loved curling and was even
a champion boxer while in the army. He was a well-known musician that
played fiddle with his bandmates for decades across eastern Nova
Scotia. Gerald was a man of deep faith, who was at his best being with
family and friends, sharing stories with much laughter. Gerald was a
longstanding member of St. Ann’s Parish and a member of
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 81, Guysborough. The family would like to
thank Dr. Ranjini, Dr. Bell and all the nurses at Guysborough Memorial
Hospital for the care and devotion to duty they showed Gerald and all
their patients. A special thank you to the staff at Milford Haven Home
for Special Care, as well as Guysborough Home Care for the love and
compassion they showed Gerald every day.
A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. on
Saturday, July 31 in St Ann’s Parish Cemetery , Guysborough with
Father Calistus Abazie officiating.
Memorial donations in memory of Gerald may be to Royal Canadian
Legion, Br. 81 Guysborough or Guysborough Memorial
Hospital.
