Obituary
Freya Fullner born December 26, 1941 passed away December 31, 2020 at the Cowichan District Hospital after a brief but intense battle with Cancer. She is survived in Canada by her sons Frank and Mark Schlichting, daughter Inga Smith, granddaughter Amanda Smith, grandson Kane Schlichting; as well the Fullner family in Germany, her twin brother Meinhard and nephews Marc and Lars.
Freya recently moved back to the coast after three years in Kimberly to be near her many friends from her previous home of fourteen years on Thetis Island. She was well known in the island community for her pottery (nearly everyone has at least a couple of pieces), her culinary contributions to Soups On, playing the Christmas concerts, and especially for her fierce strength of character built into a small package.
Freya lived an adventuresome lifestyle, ready to follow her intuition to new places. She touched many lives living in many locations; emigrating to Quebec from Hamburg in 1961 to become a Canadian Citizen in 1967, she went on to live in Delta, Richmond, Armstrong, Rutland, Kelowna, Sackville N.B. (Mt Allison University), South and East Vancouver, Duncan, Shawnigan Lake, Cowichan Bay, and Crofton before her longest single residence on Thetis.
Despite some difficult times, Freya did her best to raise three children and pursue her own goals with determination and might. In the 1970’s she began creating paintings in her basement and was soon advocating for community artists, starting an art club and organizing painting shows. Many years later, Freya enrolled in Okanagan College in Kelowna to expand her artistic expression, resulting in a commission to design the 1,000 lb, 15+ foot tall metal torch sculpture used to house the flame for the BC Summer Games for decades to come.
Freya was admired for her spunk and zest for life, she lit up our lives like a firecracker. She lived adventurously, resulting in serious riding injuries from both horse and motorbike. She loved animals and always had a least one dog or cat companion. In her late forties, Freya packed her belongings and her youngest son Mark into her VW van and drove across Canada to earn her Fine Arts Degree at Mt. Allison University. Independent and strong, she had a no-nonsense attitude to “get er’ done”, there was no stopping her incredible drive and enthusiasm.
Once retired from working as a Care Aide, she lived in Cowichan Bay on a beautiful 55 foot sailboat, the Fury IV. She and her second husband went cash buying salmon roe, did sailboat charters, and she opened a pottery studio on shore to continue her passion. She later moved to Thetis Island where she fell in love with the community and became well known for her pottery creations. She loved to entertain with baking and delicious meals, playing her guitar and singing with friends as she drank her home-made wine. She will be missed by many.
