Obituary
Fred Koke, husband, brother (in-law), uncle, passed away on October 2, 2021, surrounded by his wife, his brothers and sisters, and members of his extended family.
From early in his life, Fred’s magnetic personality commanded attention. In his adolescent and early adult years Fred was committed to living life to the fullest, pursuing adventure across Canada and into many countries in Europe. His vivid memories of these experiences were the source of rich tales with which he would regale many listeners. He could convert a minor moment into a compelling narrative story. Fred’s sense of adventure drew him to the biographies of courageous explorers such as David Thompson, Kit Carson, or Meriwether Lewis, larger-than-life people he admired, and in his own way, emulated.
Fred loved music, from classical music to 1970’s rock and roll to current popular performers. As a younger man he was proud to be told he looked like Mick Jagger. He readily shared obscure and little-known details about a performer’s life or a band’s development long before they became famous. He boasted a record collection that surely rivalled the CBC’s own library.
Fred was a carpenter craftsman. In his study of building construction and in the practice of his trade he brought attention to detail and manifested proud respect for the materials and traditions of his craft.
Fred loved people and thrived at family gatherings and social events. He was a kind uncle to his nieces and nephews, beloved for giving them personal attention when they were children.
Marija and Lucy shared in loving and intimate relationships with Fred, and will always cherish these memories.
In his last years, and in response to various health challenges, he began to feel the shrinking of his horizons.
We will miss him greatly but will hear the echoes of his presence in our lives for years to come.
A funeral service will take place on Friday, October 8 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of the Ridley Funeral Home, 3080 Lake Shore Blvd W (between Kipling and Islington).
