Freda Mary MacAskill 2021

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Freda Mary MacAskill of Edwardsville, on Monday, September 6, 2021, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born April 7, 1945, in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Julia (Gouthro) Wilkie.
Freda enjoyed playing the bagpipes and was proud that she was able to celebrate the opening of the Canso Causeway with the pipe band. After finishing high school, Freda was employed by RBC and later decided to be a stay-at-home mom. Her children were her world. She loved baking and cooking, especially when it was time to make preserves. Freda made the best pickled beets and cucumber relish. She enjoyed entertaining company at her home and staying in touch with family and friends, whether near or far. Freda also enjoyed a good game of Crib, even more so when she beat Danny. They also enjoyed watching Coronation Street together. She was a member of the Church of the Incarnation, Edwardsville.
Freda looked beautiful as always and so in love with Danny as they celebrated their 50-year golden anniversary on July 31, 2021. She hadn’t been out of the hospital for very long, but so enjoyed the celebration arranged by her daughter and family. Freda was so happy to see all her friends and be surrounded by family, for they meant everything to her. She was a very strong woman who battled many health issues and ailments over the last several years with Danny by her side every step of the way. Freda had a heart of gold and loved everyone, helping them with her kind words. She had strength and courage that was like no other.
Freda was so proud of her grandchildren and they loved her so much. “Our nan had ears that always listened, arms that would hug and hold, love that was never ending, and a heart that was made of gold.”
Freda is survived by her loving husband, Daniel; daughter, Leigh-Ann (Shaun) MacAskill-Burke, Sydney; son, Kent (Sayaka) MacAskill, Japan; grandchildren, Joshua, Lucas, Kento and Luka; sister-in-laws, Ann and Liz (Rossie); brother-in-law, Robert (Judy); and many nieces and nephews. Over the years, she made many friends, but close to Freda’s heart was her special childhood friend, Lee who was her best friend and always by her side whenever she was needed.
Freda was predeceased by her sister-in-law, Sheila; brother-in-laws, John and Stewart; and nephew, David.
Visitation and a funeral service will be held at a later date when the family can be together.
Memorials may be made to charity of your choice.
