Obituary
A resident of Jasper, Alberta for over 50 years, Frank peacefully left this world on Dec. 29, 2020, with his beloved wife, Gail, and daughters, Anne Stubbs (Dave) and Jayne Leong (Marc Williams) by his side. He will be dearly missed by his grandsons (Christopher Stubbs, Jonathan Stubbs, Dane Williams); his siblings (Star Stanley, Helen Lee, Mabel Loo, David Leong, Robert Leong, Albert Leong, Wayne Leong, Elaine Chan); large extended family; and many friends.
Frank, the 7th of 13 children, began his life journey in Lethbridge, Alberta. His parents, Leong Way and Florence Ho, were Chinese immigrants who became a vital part of the community. His father was a family man and merchant whose legacy is the historic site of Bow On Tong (a trading company) in Lethbridge’s Chinatown. His Mother, Florence Ho, who ran the New China Chop Suey Restaurant, was the first of 15 women recognized in an exhibition at the Galt Museum – “Honouring Women of Lethbridge” – which included having a Crescent named after her in the north suburb of Legacy Ridge.
Frank studied engineering at the University of Alberta, eventually settling in Jasper with his young family. During 35+ years with Parks Canada, he made significant contributions to the infrastructure, management, and beauty of Jasper National Park. Frank knew everyone and was greeted with a friendliness and familiarity he gave in return. Well-known and respected in the community for his philanthropy and service, he recently donated historical items to the Jasper Archives to remain a part of the history of the town.
Frank had a deep appreciation for music. He collected and played several guitars, banjos, keyboards, harmonicas and mandolins and he could often be seen on his doorstep playing his guitar. His daughters were impressed that “old” dad knew how to play “Stairway to Heaven” and “Hotel California”. He also enjoyed cooking and sharing his culinary knowledge. He was an avid reader and good conversationalist, contemplating life often with good-natured levity and humour.
In 1988, Frank married Gail, and they enjoyed a vibrant and active lifestyle together: attending social events and family reunions, playing cards and entertaining. They spent many years hiking and skiing the local trails, enjoying the wildlife and the beauty of Wild Rose Country. Frank loved the mountains and could name peaks surrounding the area like they were family. His love of nature was passed on to his daughters who visited frequently over the years, returning to their childhood town to happily spend time in those mountains with him.
In 2020, Frank joined Gail at the Alpine Summit Seniors Lodge, where they thoroughly enjoyed a comfortable easy life with new activities. He was grateful for the excellent staff, great food, and friendly attention. Frank’s family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to all the lodge staff for their time and care during his short stay at the lodge. In addition, we would like to thank Dr. Unsworth, the Homecare team, and all the nursing staff at Seton Hospital for their unwavering support and care during this difficult time.
Frank believed in humility and benevolence and with his giving nature, he often lent a hand to friends and neighbours in need. A donation to your favourite charity in lieu of flowers is appreciated.
Private service to be held at a later date.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Frank Gway Wing Leong May 20 1935 December 29 2020 (age 85)..
