Obituary of Frances Anne Smith
SMITH – Frances Anne (nee Walters) of Sparta passed away peacefully at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Monday, October 25, 2021 in her 87th year. Beloved wife of the late Harold Smith (2013) for 57 years. Anne is survived by her son Michael Smith, her daughter Susan Smith (Wayne McEachren) of Kitchener, and by several nieces and nephews. Anne was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Frances Walters, her brother Tom Walters and his wife Niola, and her brother-in-law Dr. Don Smith. Born at home on the family dairy farm in 1935, some of Anne’s earliest memories included helping with the haying at harvest time, bringing in the cows at dinnertime, and her dad providing school transportation to all the neighborhood kids in a horse-drawn cutter after a record snowfall. After completing business college, Anne joined the office staff of the St Thomas Psychiatric Hospital, where she worked for several years before leaving to manage the Smith family business, Erie View Poultry Farm. She was a long-time member of Sparta United Church, where she taught Sunday school, played the piano, and was active in the UCW. Anne’s memorial service will be held in the chapel at the Shawn Jackson Funeral Home 31 Elgin Street, St. Thomas (519-631-0570) on Friday, October 29, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. Interment of ashes in Sparta Cemetery.
