We regret to announce the death of Florence Rose (Gillis) Cameron, age 80, of Judique, who passed away in St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish on Wednesday March 17th. Rose was born in Inverness, the daughter of Angus R. and Jessie Ellen (MacMaster) Gillis. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Parish in Judique.
Rose was not expected to survive her infancy and was baptized on the day she was born. Her mother, who was unwell, passed away six months later. Rose and her brother, Hughie were taken in by Jessie Ellen’s close friend, Florence MacIsaac and her husband, Duncan. There they spent many happy years.
Rose moved to Boston before her twentieth birthday and remained there for ten years. She was employed by two companies over those years. One was Arcless Switch and the second one served the aerospace industry. Although there were several people from “home” who worked with her, she did not miss an opportunity to visit her MacIsaac parents in Judique,
In 1970, Rose returned to Cape Breton and went to work with her brother, Hughie in his oil delivery business. It was during that period that she met her future husband at a friend’s wedding in Port Hood. She and John Donald were married in 1978. They resided in Dartmouth and she was happily employed with Scotsburn Dairy, who she had worked for in Port Hawkesbury, when it was known as Brookfield Foods.
Her foster mother, Florence who was a widow, having lost her husband, Duncan in 1987, became ill. Rose felt the obligation to return to Cape Breton and tend to her care. This she did faithfully and admirably until her beautiful foster mother passed away in 1997.
Rose had the urge to be in the workforce again and she took employment with Lighthouse Cottages. There she did everything from office work to preparing rooms. She made many friends among staff and guests; some of whom have kept in touch, from long distances, and to the present.
Rose is survived by her husband, John Donald; her brother, Hughie and his wife Sharon; nieces, Natasha and Telesa and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Angus R. and mother, Jessie Ellen; her foster parents, Duncan and Florence MacIsaac.
The remains will rest at the Judique Fire Hall on Monday March 22nd from 3:00pm-7:00pm. Funeral will be held at 11:00am on March 23rd from St. Andrew’s Parish Church in Judique. Burial will be at a later date. Covid restrictions are in effect as required. Memorial Donations may be made to Judique Fire Department. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Green’s Funeral Home, 507 Bernard St., Port Hawkesbury. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.greensfuneralhome.ca
