Faith Elizabeth Thorne (Kennedy)
February 16, 1927 – May 18, 2021
It is with both great honor and sadness that we announce the passing of Faith Thorne, who passed away after 94 years of life. Born in Deer Lake, NL, Faith grew up in a small town with hopes and dreams of becoming a nurse and taking care of those who needed care the most. After graduating Corner Brook Public High School in 1944, a young Faith left her small town for big city adventures as she entered into the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing under the Sisters of Charity in 1945. There she not only learned how to build on her natural gifts and abilities to nurture others, but made lifelong friendships with those she graduated with.
After graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1948 she returned to NL to work at the Banting Memorial Hospital in Gander. There she met and married the love of her life; Arthur C. Thorne who took her on adventures as they began their family moving to Stephenville, Halifax and then Goose Bay, Labrador. She stepped away from taking care of others in the nursing role to raise her three girls who were her pride and joy. After the move to NS she continued to volunteer in nursing roles over the years as her family grew while lending her time teaching Sunday school. As a devote Christian, Faith was a lifelong member of the Anglican Church, a member of the Altar Guild and A.C.W. where she took on many roles where she could practice her faith and give back whenever she could.
Faith shined in the role of both Wife and Mother but she truly found her fit when she became a Grandmother. She was the classic Nanny and mastered the art of spoiling her grandchildren; always making jokes, amazing desserts and sneaking treats and money in whenever she could.
Her downhome Newfoundland cooking was always sought after. She was her happiest with a house full of people and relished in the moments when everyone could be together around the table. She took on strangers, neighbors and extended family as if they were her own. Everyone found comfort and comedy in her presence and she always made a spot at the table for whoever knocked on her door. She was always up for a good chat and heart to heart when you needed a shoulder to lean on. It was very rare in her 94 years to capture a good quality picture of Faith as she was notorious for making funny faces and always having her mouth open at the most inappropriate times. She was a keeper of momentos; capturing each one of her children’s and grandchildren’s precious moments and milestones. She always had two of everything and would never cease to amaze of what she pulled out of the tickle trunk we called her purse.
After a full lifetime both with true challenges, gifts, blessing and obstacles, Faith showed strength in every situation she was put in. From surviving cancer to surviving a broken heart after losing those she loved, Faith never wavered in her strength and trust in God.
Living over a decade without her husband, her broken heart couldn’t take anymore after the loss of her precious daughter Suzanne in February 2021. We find comfort in knowing she is reunited with them both along with her son who was lost in infancy, her parents James and Ella Kennedy, sisters Joan and Monica and her brother Gerald.
She is survived by daughters Jane and Denise, son in law Bill, 5 grandchildren; Jennifer, Marlee, Christopher, Shawn and Stephen and 5 great-grandsons. She leaves behind her brother Jim (Kathy), beloved niece Carolyn and longtime friend Christel. Faith also leaves behind the Thorne brothers and sisters and their families who were very near and dear to her heart. She loved them all and through them her memory will live on.
In honoring Faith’s wishes, cremation has taken place and she will be interred with her husband with only family members in attendance. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Donations in Faith’s honor and memory can be made to All Saints Anglican Church or the Salvation Army.
