Obituary
Evelyn May (Eve) Smith
On Saturday, February 13th, 2021, Eve Smith, formerly of Portage la Prairie, passed away at Third Crossing Manor in Gladstone, MB at the age of 98 years.
Eve was born on August 6th, 1922 at Worthing, Sus, England. During World War II she met Harry Brown who was serving with the Royal Canadian Medical Corps, and they were married in 1942. Harry was killed in action in 1943. In June 1945, Eve married Allan Smith who was serving with the Fort Garry Horse Regiment. Eve came to Canada in February 1946 to join Allan on the Smith Family Farm at Beaver, MB. In the fall of 1948, they purchased a farm in the Burnside District, farming there until 1963 when they moved into Portage la Prairie.
Eve had been an adherent of the United Church, while at Burnside she was a member of the U.C.W. and taught in the Sunday School. She was a founding member on the board of Wee World Day Care Center. She serviced as treasurer of the Portage Tennis Club for a number of years. Eve enjoyed sewing, knitting, handcrafts, and was an avid letter writer, keeping in touch with family and friends in England, Australia and Canada. Eve had been employed as a secretary at the Omega Funeral Home for close to twenty years, retiring in 1991. Post retirement she spent a number of winters in Victoria, B.C. until failing health made the trips impractical.
Eve was predeceased by two infant daughters, her parents, her sister Irene Graham in 1983, and her husband Allan in 1987.
She leaves to mourn her passing; her sister Dorothy Renaud, son Michael, daughter Megan and partner Lorne, two grandsons Curtis and Jeremy, and twin granddaughters Danielle (Steve) and Denise (Luc), great granddaughter Logan, as well as many nieces and nephews. Eve greatly enjoyed the friendships and times spent with close friends.
Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, a private family service will take place with interment to follow the service at the Beaver Cemetery.
Should friends so desire donations can be made to Central Plains Cancer Services, 318 Sask. Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8, or to the charity of one’s choice.
