Obituary
Evelyn Mary Brown
North Sydney
In the presence of her family, Evelyn Mary Brown passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, two months shy of her 103rd birthday. The daughter of the late Jessie and Suzanne Rose, Mom, was born on July 13, 1918, in Hermitage, Nfld. She had a wonderful childhood, surrounded by many aunts, uncles and other relatives. She was the last survivor of her immediate family, her siblings Bertha, Hilda and brother Ernest.
Her first life adventure started at age 19, when she left her small fishing village to work at a boarding house in Port Aux Basque, Nfld. She soon left for North Sydney and shortly after met the love of her life, a young soldier named Alpheus (Alfie) Brown. They were married and had two boys, Franklyn (Doris) Brown and Winston (Alfreda) Brown. When Dad returned from the war, they had a daughter Jocelyn (Nash) Brogan and two sons Ernest (Carolyn) Brown and Perry (Donna) Brown. Mom is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Alfie passed away in 1987, and Mom spent the next 30 years as a resident of Beacon Crescent Apartments, where she formed many new and special friendships. Mom learned to knit at age 14 and continued until 2019. Her “Nanny Brown Mittens” are still being passed from generation to generation throughout the area. She is also predeceased by two grandchildren, Will Brown and Liam Brown.
The family would like to thank the staff of Northside Homemakers who enabled her to live independently until age 101. Then a move to Northside General Hospital, 4W, where the staff adopted her once again and gave her a new and special home. Her final move was to Northside Guest Home, where the staff of Joseph Hall did everything possible to make her feel at home. Mom was often asked what her secret was to living past her 100th birthday and her answer was always, “because I was always surrounded by good and kind people, especially Alfie.” This is certainly true of all the staff mentioned above. She has a strong faith as a member of St. John’s Anglican Church, North Sydney.
Due to Covid 19 restrictions, there will be no visitation or funeral. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
