It is with great sadness that the family of Evelyn Isabel Fox, 93, of Bridgewater, and formerly a longtime resident of Lunenburg, announce her passing at Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville on Thursday, September 23, 2021.
Born in Churchover, N.S., she was a daughter of the late Sidney and Elva Mahaney. Her father was the famous Master Dory Builder of Shelburne.
Evelyn was a humble woman who always saw the good in everyone and everything. After finishing school Evelyn worked at the local drugstore in Shelburne where she eventually met her future husband Robert Fox of Lunenburg. Robert was working with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and following their marriage they moved to Chester and finally settled in Lunenburg.
Evelyn was a talented seamstress who eventually opened a successful small business in her own home. Her talent was well known, and she had many returning customers. She excelled in wedding and prom apparel and made many costumes for figure skating and school events. She was a volunteer with Girl Guides of Canada and her church.
Evelyn and Bob enjoyed 42 years of camping at “Suits Us” on Masons Island. Family and many friends visited there often each summer. After retirement Evelyn and Bob made numerous cruises on their favourite line Holland America where they became Life Mariners. On one special voyage departing Ocho Rios, Jamaica they were invited to the bridge where Evelyn was allowed to take the helm leaving port- something that would never happen today!
In 1989, Evelyn was presented a St. John Ambulance award for “Valuable Assistance to Mankind”. She was also an active supporter of many events at the Lunenburg Legion and Fire Hall. In her final years, Evelyn lived happily at Ridgewood seniors’ residence in Bridgewater where she engaged daily in many activities with staff and other residents.
She is survived by daughter, Gail (Tom) Hayes, Halifax; son, Gary (Susan), Lunenburg; grandchildren, Robert (Shannon), Nicole (Billy), Julie, Jamie (Kathryn), Mary Beth (Brady); great grandchildren, Jack, Kaylee, Caden, Casey, William, Celine and Isabella Evelyn; as well as her brother, Curtis, of Churchover.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased her husband, Robert and six brothers.
The family wants to express their special thanks to Dr. McGuire of Bridgewater and Drs. Clarke and Howatt of the Valley Regional Hospital.
