ELSPETH VALERIE CALDER
July 23, 1933 – November 26, 2021
The family of Elspeth Valerie Calder, age 88 years, sadly announces her passing in St. Joseph’s Hospice on Friday, November 26, 2021.
Val was born on July 23, 1933 in Dunfermline, Scotland. She married the love of her life, Leonard James (Scotty) Calder, on January 9, 1954. In 1956, they came to Canada where she worked as an RNA in various healthcare facilities, until retirement in 1997. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Val was a special person and will be deeply missed by all.
Val will be forever remembered by her beloved grandsons Spencer and Adam; daughter-in-law Cyndy (Stephan); sister Susan Hamilton and other relatives in Scotland.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard in 2010; son Jason in 2018 and her parents Herbert Hamilton and Janet McCoy.
Funeral Services for Valerie Calder will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 11:00AM in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, officiated by Rev. Joyce Yanishewski. A video recording of the service will be available on the Everest of Thunder Bay website beginning on Sunday. A private interment will be held next summer in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Should friends so desire, donations made in memory of Val to Kitty Kare, Canadian Cancer Society or charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
THANK YOU FROM VAL
Thank you to Dr. Janet McLeod, who went above and beyond for me; Dr. Pam Johnson and Dr. Steve Roedde for all the research you did; Dr. Donald Franchi, who got the ball rolling for my care; Dr. Kathy Simpson for all of your help, care, calls and visits; and Nurse Practitioner Aaron Medd for your calls and visits as well.
Thank you to my Palliative Care Coordinator and all members of my team who made sure I had everything I needed to stay home as long as possible.
To Rev. Joyce Yanishewski, thank you for your calls, visits and comforting words. And to my church family – what would I have done without you? Your calls, visits, books, treats and soup – things to make me want to eat – were so comforting to me. I love you all. Also to many dear friends, thank you for caring and your love. Your phone calls lifted me up when I was down.
It has been a short, but hard journey. However, with the love I received, it was easier to bear. If I have missed anyone, my apologies but know you are appreciated.
Lastly, thank you to my beloved family. To my daughter-in-law Cyndy (my rock), thank you for all you have done and have yet to do. I couldn’t have done it without you. To my special grandsons Spencer and Adam, thank you for everything, especially the great hugs you gave to me.
– God Bless you all, Val
