Obituary for
Ellis Barclay
BARCLAY, Ellis
It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ellis Weldon Barclay at the Glen-Stor-Dun Lodge on Friday, November 12, 2021, at the age of 84. Beloved husband of the late Carolyn (Vanhorne) Barclay. Loving father of Laura Barclay Herod (Jason) and Sarah Barclay Thomas (Eric). Adored grandfather of Lauren and Ariel Thomas and Luke Herod. Sadly missed by his brother Paul Barclay (Carol) of Ottawa. Predeceased by his parents Weldon and Grace (Poole) Barclay and his brother Winston (Jorja). He will be missed by his nieces and nephews and their families along with many friends, colleagues, and past students. Ellis was a devoted and kind husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He will be remembered as a wonderful CCVS English teacher, Queen’s graduate, pianist, sprinter, skier, walker, traveller, bridge player, swimmer, reader, storyteller, church member, volunteer, tennis player, cyclist, poet, canoeist, and a romantic. To honour our father and his love of teaching English, a memorial scholarship will be created to be awarded yearly to a CCVS student. A charitable donation towards the Ellis Barclay Memorial Scholarship may be sent directly to CCVS, 437 Sydney Street, Cornwall, Ontario, K6H 3H9. Giving to the Alzheimer’s Society, Heart and Stroke or any charity of choice would be a lovely gesture. To honour Ellis’ wishes cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to visit at St. John’s Presbyterian Church 28 Second St. East, Cornwall on Friday, December 10, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A celebration of Ellis’ life will take place on Saturday, December 11, at 11:00 am at St. John’s with Reverend Adams officiating; a luncheon will follow. 1. Dear Laura and Sarah,
It was with sadness that I learned of Ellis’s passing. He was a kind and gentle man who was always calm and collected.
One of my fondest memories of Ellis was of his time at CCVS. The English dept at the time was full of rambunctious sorts and someone came up with the practical joke that we should all dress in blue on Thursdays – but not tell Ellis. When Thursday would roll around and Ellis showed up in anything but blue, someone would say, “Well … Ellis” and leave it at that. This went on for weeks until one Thursday there was a department meeting. Ellis looked at all of us and exclaimed, “I just noticed that you are all dressed in blue!” … and he was met with a resounding chorus of “WELL ….. ELLIS!!” To his credit, he laughed heartily …. although I am not sure that he ever trusted us completely again! as I indicated, we were rather rambunctious sorts!
I was able to attend the memorial service but unfortunately had to leave early – It was a lovely service and Ellis, I am sure, was pleased.
    With deepest sympathy, Katie Burke
