Ellen Elizabeth MacKinnon
Gardiner Mines
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness, that we the family announce the sudden passing of Ellen MacKinnon, age 86 of Gardiner Mines on Wednesday, November 10th, 2021, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay on September 15th, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine (Gouthro) Boutilier.
Ellen married the love of her life Billy, and together they raised four amazing sons. A woman of strong faith, Ellen attended church regularly in her younger years, and never missed mass for shut ins. She was a quick-witted little lady who loved a good night of song and dance. She never said no to a game of cards and was a fierce cribbage competitor. Mom was the historian of the family and always had many tales to tell. She was a wonderful, loving woman who will be missed tremendously by all who knew and loved her.
Ellen is survived by her three sons, Steve, Gardiner Mines, Daniel (Brenda), Sydney, and Arthur (Susie), Sydney; sisters Caddie Royal, Mary (Jimmy) Mackie, Anna Boutilier; brothers Willie (Marg) Boutilier, Alvin Boutilier; sister-in-law Mary Boutilier, brother-in-law Martin MacKinnon; six grandchildren Tiffany, Courtney, Brena, Cailin, Tara, Scottie; four great-grandchildren Tiana, Shoncy, Brooklyn, Elizabeth; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and great friends. Special thanks to niece, Debbie Allen for the incredible care and companionship she has always shown Mom.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Billy, son David (Cathy), and brother Joey Boutilier.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 16th from 12-2pm at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave, New Waterford 902-862-7500. A chapel service will take place at 2pm with Father Peter McLeod officiating. Masks as well as proof of double vaccination are required. Interment to take place at St. James Cemetery in Gardiner Mines, followed by a reception at the Gardiner Mines Community Hall.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of one’s choice.
