Eldred was born October 16, 1927 in Toronto, Ontario. She died in the manner that she chose surrounded by family in her 94th year on Friday, February 26, 2021. Beloved wife of the late Edward Brown Swinton for over 67 years. Daughter of the late Olive (Ross) and Mayor J. Austin Cook of Orillia, Ontario. Dear Mother of Sheila (Mark), Peter (Doris), Louise (Richardo). Loving Grandmother of Amelia, Tessah (Brett), Yarra, Melissa (Matthew), Austin (Lacey), Darlene (Michael) and the late Traviss. Great Grandmother of Arianna, Evelyn, Isla, Logan, Dax and Quinten.
Eldred started her teaching career at the age of 17 as a Teaching Principal of Grades 1 to 9 in a “one room little red school house”, SS. #13 Carlyon, Ontario. The rest of her career was in Ontario (Toronto, Etobicoke) and West Vancouver, British Columbia.
Eldred was an advocate for volunteerism:
• Starting at a young age as a member of the United Church of Canada;
• During World War 2;
o Member of the “V for Victory Club”, in Orillia, Ontario for the “British War Victims’ Relief” Fund;
o 2nd in command of a company of the Orillia Collegiate Women Cadets;
• In Vancouver, British Columbia as a director for the United Appeal, Governor for the Y.M.C.A. and President of the Hollyburn Toastmistress Club;
• 29 years with the Travellers’ Aid Society of Toronto at the Toronto International Airport;
• Instructor of “Save a Child” for the St. John Ambulance;
• Over 30 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion, receiving the Poppy Appreciation Award;
• High Priestess of Bokhara Court Shrine No. 22, Toronto, Ontario;
• President of the Retired Women and Men Teachers’ Organizations in Mississauga, Ontario;
• Provincial President of the Retired Teachers’ of the Province of Ontario
She and Edward travelled the world, Scottish Country Danced in the Military Tatoos at the Canadian National Exhibition Grand Stand Shows in 1976, 1977 and at the Skydome in Honour of Toronto’s 200th Birthday.
She will be dearly missed by friends and family.
