MacDonald, Edmund John “Eddie”, It is with heavy
hearts we announce the sudden passing of Eddie MacDonald, age 72, of
Heatherton, Antigonish County on December 11, 2021, in St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Antigonish, he was a son of the late William D. and
Ann Bernardine (Chisholm) MacDonald.
After graduating from TUNS, Eddie took a position with the
Department of Highways working towns between Yarmouth and Bridgewater,
but always with an eye to moving home, and in 1973 when a transfer
came up to move to Guysborough, that’s just what he and
Margie did. All told, Eddie worked with the Department of
Transportation from 1972-2005 all over Nova Scotia. Retirement not for
him, he and Margie formed EdMar Engineering in 2006. He also stayed in
close contact with his former grads and colleagues in The Old Farts
Club.
Eddie’s commitment to Heatherton was unrivaled,
serving on the board of directors of the Activity Centre and on parish
council, organizing the Fraser’s Grant Reunion, playing and
coaching hockey and ball, and especially it was evident in his passion
for converting the former school to a community centre.
A quiet leader and complete gentleman, Eddie had the ability
to adapt to anyone and was often sought out for leadership and
advice. He was also a Christmas tree grower and enjoyed
camping, live music, moose hunting, and skidoo trips around Nova
Scotia and Newfoundland. The thing he loved above all else
was spending time with family and friends on top of Billy’s
Hill.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Margie (Brophy);
children, Tracey (Mike) MacDonald, Brierly Brook; Mike (Michaele),
Heatherton; Lori, Heatherton; and Danny (Mitch), Heatherton;
grandchildren, Malcolm, Sean, Blaine, Maggie, Addie, and
Cléa; siblings, Dorothy (Spencer) Greencorn, Heatherton;
Frances Brymer, Boylston; Billy, Fraser’s Grant; and Ambrose
(Doreen), Afton; sister-in-law, Mary-Ellen MacDonald, Heatherton; and
many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by brother, Donnie; sister, Shirley (Howie)
Etheridge; brother-in-law, Kenny Brymer; and niece, Jill
Brymer.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9pm and Wednesday
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College
Street, Antigonish. Valid proof of vaccination and photo ID
is required, and due to health concerns in the family, social
distancing is strongly requested.
Funeral Mass will be held Thursday in Immaculate Conception
Church, Heatherton, at 11:00am. Again, COVID protocols are
in place. The service will be livestreamed and recorded and
available on the funeral home website. Burial in the parish
cemetery.
In Memoriam, donations to Jax Mac
Foundation or Immaculate Conception Parish
