Edith Fournier, born on Feb 23, 1925, passed from this life to the next on Dec. 15, 2021. Grieving her loss but eternally thankful for her life are her husband of 71 years, Wilfred Fournier, and children Leslie, James (Luci), Kathryn and Mary Louise as well as her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the extended Sanderson and Fournier families. Edith was predeceased by her son Alan and grandson Danny, who rejoice at her arrival in heaven.
Edith was born in Kenora, lived for a number of years in the Toronto area (and briefly in Halifax) and then moved to Fort Simpson and Whitehorse with Wilf’s work. They retired to the Okanagan valley where they enjoyed life in Enderby for 30 years before moving to Kelowna in 2019.
Edith graduated as a registered nurse in 1949 and worked at several hospitals, including the Sioux Lookout Indian Hospital. She returned to nursing part-time once all her children were in school.
Edith was an independent, energetic woman who lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed camping throughout her life, beginning with Wilf’s homemade trailer. She also loved having her own car – and using it to teach her children to drive. In retirement, Edith and Wilf traveled to destinations as diverse as China and Israel.
Edith’s parents, Maurice Sanderson and Mary Ann Hall, spent many years in an Anglican residential school near Winnipeg. Maurice became an Anglican Priest and Canon, and Edith’s Anglican faith was an unwavering foundational cornerstone of her life. She was a proud member of the Pinaymootang First Nation and was a plaintiff in a legal challenge to the enfranchisement provisions of the Indian Act based on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms at the time of her death.
Edith provided a warm and loving home to her whole family throughout our lifetimes and at annual family reunions that became a testament to how much she and Wilf were loved and admired. They will continue in her honour and she will be remembered always.
Funeral arrangements are pending. A celebration of Edith’s life will be held in summer 2022.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Edith Sandy Margaret Fournier nee Sanderson December 15th 2021..
