ZACHARIAH, Dr Sarah (née George) M.B. B.S., died peacefully on 13 th February 2021, mercifully released after a long period of illness and decline borne with fortitude and grace: beloved wife of the late Philip Zachariah FRCS, treasured daughter of the late George and Anna Abraham, devoted mother of Kuruvila and George, adored grandmother of Zara and Sebastian, and cherished mother-in-law to Susanna. She is survived by a wide network of loving family and friends, including her sisters Anna and Elizabeth and her brothers Thomas and Mathai. She will be greatly missed and remembered for her warmth, kindness, love, compassion, and faith.
Sarah was born on 14 th May 1936, the first child of George and Anna Abraham in Alleppey, Kerala State, India. The eldest of eight, she was a role model for her siblings. She attended the Nicholson School for Girls and Women’s Christian College, Madras, prior to graduating as a doctor from the Christian Medical College, Vellore. She specialised in paediatrics, taking the Diploma in Child Health in 1959. She practised in India and then in England from 1960. She was married in 1963.
She came to Canada in the early seventies, where she raised her two children and worked as well, though she did not practise medicine. With her family, she lived in Saskatoon, Estevan, Wawa, and then Hanover (in the latter for 37 years). She was very active in the church and voluntary associations, including the Leprosy Mission. She was devoted to her family and friends far and wide, travelling regularly to visit relatives. While suffering at various times from some chronic conditions, she always tried to help and care for others first.
