At the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, on Wednesday May 5th, 2021, Dr John Arthur Roe of Chatham passed away in his 88th year. John was born in Chatham, Ontario and was the cherished son of the late Ledson and Darcy (Coatsworth) Roe. He was raised on a farm in South Buxton, the youngest of 4 children. He is survived by his wife Eleanor (Palin) Roe. John is predeceased by his brother Robert, and sisters Betty Roe and Margaret Dawson. John was educated in a one-room schoolhouse in Raleigh Township, and he attended Merlin District High School. He attended the University of Western Ontario and graduated M.D. in 1958. John interned at Hamilton General Hospital. He specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Victoria Hospital in London and Hamilton General Hospital. He completed his course of studies in 1963 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ob/Gyn also in 1963. Dr. Roe began his medical practice in Chatham the same year. While doing his specialty training, he married Eleanor. They have shared over 61 years of life together. Before Dr. Roe retired, Eleanor worked in his office. Besides his busy practice, Dr. Roe was Chief of Staff at the Public General Hospital from 1968 to 1975, and he was the Chief of OB/Gyn from 1965 to 1996. In 1996 Dr. Roe closed his office and became a Medical Surveyor for the Canadian Counsel of Health Services until 2002. Dr. Roe received the Glenn Sawyer Service Award presented by the Ontario Medical Association and the Kent Medical Association in 2003. From 2002 to 2005 Dr. Roe assisted at the Southwestern Regional Centre in Cedar Springs doing client physical screenings. After retirement John studied and became an accomplished watercolour artist. John enjoyed singing in the choir at Holy Trinity Anglican Church. He and Eleanor enjoyed travelling to different parts of the world and spending time at their vacation home in the Kawartha Lake District. Family and friends are invited to Alexander & Houle Funeral Home, 245 Wellington St. West, Chatham, 519-352-2710 on Friday May 7th, 2021 with visiting from 2 to 4 pm. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, you must schedule your visitation time in advance by calling the funeral home at (519) 352-2710. All attendees as mandated by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario must wear a mask at all visitations. A family memorial service will be streamed live from the funeral home on Saturday May 8th, 2021 at 1:30 pm with Rev. CJ Adams officiating. Cremation has taken place. Interment to take place at a later date. Friends planning an expression of remembrance are asked to consider Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation, and Holy Trinity/St. Paul’s Anglican Church.
