Obituary for
Dr. David McDowell
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dave. Born and raised in Pottsville, Dave attended Whitney Public and South Porcupine High School before obtaining his Dentistry degree from the University of Toronto in 1966.“Dr. Dave” went on to practice Dentistry in Timmins for 30 years before retiring in 1995. On Hallowe’en nights, Dr. Dave and Mrs. McDowell were famous for handing out toothbrushes to the children with many yearly repeats. For several years, he enjoyed many friendships cultivated through his involvement in the local Kinsman Club. He was also an avid pilot, having flown in his younger days and a volunteer in his later ones. Maybe his love of flying increased his love of travel as he and Marlene ventured off to various places around Canada, the US and internationally. He enjoyed his “man cave”, and his garage on Patricia Boulevard where various projects were designed and built. He also loved building and enjoying the cottage with family and friends at Marceau Lake. A day was rare where a hammer or a chainsaw was not heard but it was his long-time cottage friends that made the lake his haven. Rumour has it that both his garage and Marceau Lake were also the scene of many rambunctious gatherings of family and friends over the years. Dave was also an avid walker and he could often be seen walking around Gillies Lake to A&W where he enjoyed the daily banter with his coffee gang. “On the other side of the coin”, it was purely Dave’s love of family that drove him. Many memories were created over his 59 year marriage to Marlene. Also, left to cherish memories are Norman (Terry) of Stirling, Larry (Lynn) and Ralph (Krista) both of Timmins, and Ruth (Roger Bouchard) of Barrie. His ten grandchildren; Justine (Mike), Natasha (Rico), Victoria, Trevor, Kyle, Kara (Owen), Scott (Kirsten), Justin (Carlee), Ian and Cory were his pride and joy and he shared many of his talents with them over time. The next best thing to a grandchild is a great-grandchild. Dave was so fortunate to enjoy five; Sylas, Tayva, Maze, Elias and Robin. Also survived by his sister Marilyn Heath (Doug) and family in Timmins and his sister-in-law, Helen Miller (Duke predeceased) and family of South Porcupine. Special friend of 55 years to Dr. Bill Columbus.
The family wishes to thank the excellent staff in both the Emergency and Hospice Departments. The care over Dave’s short illness was exceptional. Also, many thanks to Dr. Larry Malo for his great care not only recently, but for the past 35 years.
As per Dave’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A small graveside service with family will be held, these were his longtime wishes as he did not like being the center of attention. Interment will be at the Whitney Cemetery. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date. Remembrance donations to Timmins and District Hospital or the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. The funeral arrangements have been entrusted with the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, Cremation and Reception Centre, 150 Balsam St. S., Timmins.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Dr David
