Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family announce the sudden passing on Saturday, February 27, 2021 of their beloved wife, mother and grandmother in Lakeside Nursing Home, Gander, NL. Dorothy was born daughter of Stephen and Hilda (Elliott) Jeans on January 16, 1945 in Lewisporte, NL. In her teenage years Dorothy moved to Change Islands where she met the love of her life, Samuel, and there, they raised their family together. Dorothy and Sam were married on Change Islands, NL on March 26, 1968 and at the time of her passing they were just 27 days shy of their 53rd wedding anniversary. In 2010 Dorothy and Sam relocated to Stoneville, NL where she continued to live until December 2020 when she moved to Lakeside Nursing Home.
Dorothy’s greatest passion was being a devoted mother and grandmother. That motherly spirt was shared with so many children not just the four to which she gave birth. Her favorite thing was ensuring her pantry had the favorite treat of any child that came to her home. Dorothy can only be described as a woman of few words and exceptionally soft-spoken. The only words she ever raised her voice for were “stop it, Sam” as he drove her crazy in ways, she would not have changed if she could. Dorothy was a devoted Christian. Her faith provided her great comfort that one day families would re-unite.
Left to nurture the fond memories she leaves behind is her loving husband Samuel, daughters Maryann Hunter and her husband Phillip of St. John’s, NL, Marlene Leyte and her husband Brian Wong of Fall River, NS, Mildred Leyte of Calgary, AB and son Marvin Leyte and is wife Stacey of Lower Sackville, NS, grandchildren Jacob Wong (son of Marlene & Brian) and Robyn Adams (daughter of Marvin and Stacey). Jacob is especially saddened that Nanny’s fudge ball recipe has died with her.
She is also survived by siblings Dexter Jeans (Margaret) of St. John’s, NL, Martha Diamond (Llewellyn pre-deceased) of Change Islands, NL, Robert Jeans (Lydia) of Change Islands, NL, half-brother Walter Hodder (Cavell) of Gander Bay, NL, step-brother Matthew Hodder (Ivy) of Gander, NL. Dorothy’s siblings-in-law include Dora Wall (Dave) of Minden, ON; Fred Leyte (Geraldine) of Pollard’s Point, NL, Christine Sweetapple (Ray) of Glovertown, NL, Bessie Wheaton (Eldon) of Labrador City, NL and Ivan Leyte (Angela) of Hillgrade, NL. There are many nieces and nephews too numerous to mention that she held close to her heart.
Final preparations have been entrusted to New World Island Funeral Home, Summerford, NL. Visitation will take place Monday, March 1, 2021 from 11-12 p.m. & 12:30-1:30 p.m. by invitation only due to Covid-19 restrictions. A private service will take place at New World Island Funeral Home on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. followed by the committal at the Pentecostal Cemetery in Stoneville, NL at 2:00 p.m. also by invitation only.
The family would like to thank the homecare workers of Notre Dame Compassionate Care. These girls truly became part of Dorothy’s extended family. Also, thanks to the nurses and staff at Lakeside Nursing Home for the care and consideration extended in the past months.
Donations in Dorothy’s memory may be given to the Pentecostal Cemetery Fund, Stoneville, NL.
