Obituary
Dorothy was called home to her Lord on Thursday, September 30, 2021.
Dorothy was born Dirkje Beekman in Apeldorn, Holland to Gerrit and Petertje Beekman. She immigrated to Canada with her family when she was five years old, and they would soon settle on a farm south of Fort Macleod, Alberta. She would become the 8th of 11 children in a family where hard work was expected. She often told stories of working sugar beets and singing as they hoed the rows.
Dorothy’s work in the Royal Bank would eventually lead her to Calgary, where she would meet her love, Merlin, and raise their daughter, Lorna. Dorothy and Merl would move to Fort Macleod in 2016, where they always had a hot pot of coffee or a minute to help someone needing a favour.
Dorothy was an energetic, loving, devoted oma, mother, sister, and friend who will be missed for her boldness and vibrancy and her outrageous, infectious, beautiful, unbashful laugh.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Lorna (Kevin) and her three grandchildren Anders, Grant, and Lara. She will be dearly missed by her siblings Joanne, Elberta (Casey), Gerald (Rita), Judy (Hank), Dini (Marvin), and Gerrit (Evelyn), as well as other family and friends too numerous to mention. She joins her husband Merlin, granddaughter Elsa, sisters Pat and Gerrie, brothers Elbert and Dirk, and brothers-in-law Hendrikus, Don, and Case, who passed before her.
A service for close family and friends will be held at the Fort Macleod Alliance Church on
Thursday, October 14, 2021, at 11:00 am.
The service will also be live-streamed through their Facebook page.
