Daley, Dorothy Anne (Raynham)
With sadness, but with thanks for a life well lived, our family announces that our beloved mother and grandmother Dorothy Anne Daley passed away peacefully at the Lookout Ridge retirement residence in Fonthill, Ontario on October 19, 2021 in her ninety-seventh year.
Dorothy was born in Hamilton, Ontario on December 28, 1924 to Charles and Annie (nee Lawrence) Raynham. Her four older brothers predeceased her: Cyril and Norman who were born in England; and Kenneth and Harold who were born in Hamilton.
She was also predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years W. Kenneth Daley in 2012 and by her dear daughter Maureen Walker (Lyle) in 2013.
Dorothy is greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her two sons, Daniel (Patty) of Ottawa and Thomas (Lianne) of Fonthill, as well as by her four granddaughters, Katelyn Daley (Devin Krebs) of Toronto, Kristen Daley (Bryan Pomeroy) of Welland, Danielle Walker and Evelyn Daley both of Vancouver and many other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was raised to value civility, compassion and grace. Those attributes informed her personal relations throughout her life. To her family, she was a constant source of loving encouragement and support, as well as an example of level-headedness and equanimity.
Environmental stewardship and land preservation were among her foremost passions. Long before the terroir movement became popular, Dorothy was a strong advocate and ardent practitioner of “farm to table” living. As a resident of Fonthill for more than half a century, she cultivated her passion for locally sourced foods and she served as a dedicated member, volunteer and fundraiser for the Preservation of Agricultural Lands Society in the Niagara region.
Her affection for Niagara was deep. Her volunteer work also included many years of service to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Welland Hospital Auxiliary.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Lookout Ridge for the excellent care that they have provided to Dorothy since 2012. A special expression of gratitude is also extended to her longstanding physician, Dr. Hendrik Venter, as well as to Dr. Jason King who provided medical care most recently.
In accordance with Dorothy’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Pelham Funeral Home, Fonthill. A private family gathering to honour her life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to make a contribution in memory of Dorothy consider a donation to the Preservation of Agricultural Lands Society (members.becon.org/~pals/index.html).
