Obituary
The family of the late Doris Shukin, beloved wife of the late Peter W. Shukin, announce her peaceful passing at the Norquay Health Centre on December 21, 2021, at the age of 99 years.
Doris was born on October 22, 1922, to Kuzma and Wasoonya (Konkin) Dergousoff and grew up northeast of Canora, SK, along with her three siblings, Mable, Fred, and Paul. She completed Grade 8 at Phoenix School and spent the next few years helping her family by completing the necessary chores on their farm.
Doris married Peter W. Shukin on September 25, 1940, and they farmed in the Dernic area West of Buchanan, SK. They moved to their own yard in April of 1945, where they grew grain and raised cattle and chickens. The couple were blessed with three sons, Paul, Russell, and Peter. The 1950’s and 60’s were hard, as wet years, rust, drought, low prices, and tight grain quotas made farming a challenge. Doris persevered through the toil of raising a family with no running water and only a wood stove for heat. She grew a huge garden and cooked for many hired men who worked on the threshing crew. An excellent hostess, Doris ensured no one who came to the farm left before they were fed. She milked up to eleven cows a day, sold chickens, eggs, cream and cottage cheese to supplement the farm income. Countless sacrifices were made in order to provide the best possible life for her family.
Doris and her husband built a new house in 1974 and soon after she became a widow. Her house did not stay quiet for long. In 1979, she welcomed her son Peter and his new family under her roof. Caring for young children while completing all her work was a challenge but she maintained a steady pace. She actively participated in the farm together with her two younger sons, Russell and Peter, and after 55 years of service, moved to Canora in the fall of 1995.
Life in town was an adjustment but she kept busy with her hobbies, volunteering and singing with the Canora Doukhobor Choir. With the help of her family and good neighbors on Parker Crescent, she was able to live independently until 2012. Health reasons forced her to relocate – first to Yorkton, then Norquay – where she lived out her final years. The Shukin family extends a sincere thank you to all the staff at the Norquay Health Centre, who kindly and compassionately took care of Doris during the seven years she resided there.
Doris was predeceased by her parents; husband, Peter W.; her beloved sons, Peter D. and Russel K. Shukin; granddaughter, Natalie; sister, Mable Kabatoff; and her brothers, Fred and Paul Dergousoff.
She leaves to cherish her memory her eldest son, Paul (Mildred); grandson, Geoffrey (Erin); daughter-in-law, Delores; granddaughter, Patricia (Jason Chernoff), and grandson, Kurtis (Genevieve); as well as her seven great grandchildren.
A Public Visitation will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 28, 2021, and the Funeral Service at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 29, 2021, both from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Mr. Walter Ostoforoff officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK.
