Doris “June”‘s Obituary
MACCARTHY (Kinsman), Doris “June” ~ Age 88, Auburn, Kings Co., passed away peacefully on October 21, 2021, in Valley Hospice, Kentville. Born on February 25, 1933, in Welsford, Kings Co., she was the eldest daughter of the late Cecil and Glennie (Fuller) Kinsman. She grew up in Welsford on a mixed farm where she attended the one room schoolhouse before travelling to Berwick for grade 11 and Kings County Academy for grade 12. Upon graduation, she attended Success Business College in Truro. June began her working career with Imperial Oil in Halifax and later transferred to New Jersey to work for the parent company, Esso Standard, for two years. When she returned to Nova Scotia, a former suitor by the name of Howard MacCarthy heard she was back in town and, following a short courtship, the two were married on December 16, 1961. They built their home next to Howard’s family homestead in Auburn, where they raised their family together. In her younger years, summers were spent on the Bay of Fundy in Harbourville and the annual encampments at Berwick United Church Camp under the beautiful hemlocks. June loved to travel and enjoyed trips with family and friends to Europe, the Caribbean and throughout North America. She especially loved her annual shopping trips to Maine. When the children were young, the family spent their summers camping. In later years, June and Howard spent their winters in Englewood, FL and summers at their cottage in Morden. An avid curler, June was a member of the Berwick Curling Club for 50 years, serving in executive positions and skipped teams in numerous bonspiels. She was a keen bridge player and enjoyed weekly get-togethers with her bridge club ladies. She was a golfer, artist and member of the Nicholsville Garden Club. June enjoyed following politics and was a life-long member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. Family was important to June, a true matriarch. She loved being a mother and grandmother; and was their greatest supporter, confidant, and cheerleader. June held the office of Secretary for the Board of Directors, Family and Children’s Services, Kings County and was actively involved with the “Campaign for Kids”. She was also the Secretary/Treasurer for Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Somerset for the last four decades. She was a member of the Aylesford and District Lionettes Club, an active member of the Aylesford United Church and was presented a life membership of the United Church Women in 2011.
