Hanes, Dorice Winifred (nee Joyce)
Passed away February 27, 2021 at the Carleton Place Hospital. Daughter of the late Frank Albert Joyce of Kettering, N’Hants, England and Gladys Halliday of Sunderland, Co. Durham, England. Dorice was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on January 10th, 1937. Beloved wife of Garnet (Gary) Hanes, sister Daphne Stacey of Victoria, B.C. She is survived by her sister Daphne (Alvan) Stacey, step-son Kevin Hanes of Ottawa, as well as many extended family members in Western Canada, England and Australia. She grew up in Prince Albert and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and was educated at the University of British Columbia (B.A.), University of Windsor, ON (B.S.W. and M.S.W.), and University of Edinburgh. After obtaining her Master of Social Work degree she worked in hospitals in Toronto and Ottawa. Dorice lived in Ottawa for many years with her husband Dr. Garnet (Gary) Hanes, a physicist at the National Research Council, and they later moved to Carleton Place, ON. Dorice enjoyed many travels around the world, especially those of a natural history nature. She and Gary shared a great love of the outdoors and spent time year round at their cottage near Algonquin Park, enjoying canoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, and camping with their friends. For many years, she and Gary assisted the Chief Naturalist of Algonquin Park with a research project on the life history of the Gray Jays, and were involved in various other natural history studies. She enjoyed curling and square dancing. As members of the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists club, Dorice and Gary participated in a number of activities of a natural history nature, such as field trips, hikes and lectures. A private service will take place and arrangements are in care of Alan R. Baker Funeral Home, Carleton Place. In lieu of flowers, a donation to The Friends of Algonquin Park, Box 248, Whitney, ON K0J 2M0 would be appreciated.
