Donald Roberts Curry
1935-2021
Donald Roberts Curry (1935-2021), known as
“Chick” in his early years, passed peacefully after
a lengthy and valiant struggle against several health challenges. Don
was 86, and was a long-time resident of New Brunswick, mostly in
Riverview, then spending his last few decades living down “at
the shore” near Parlee Beach, where he spent many hours on
his boat, and on the wharf, and at the beach, often with his beloved
wife, Greta (Matchett).
The son of Aubrey William Curry and Reta (Roberts), Don was
predeceased by his sisters Muriel, Audrey and Eileen, and brother
Ralph. He was the last surviving member of his immediate
family.
Don’s early life took him to Toronto to spend time
with his brother, to take in new ideas and vistas. This led him to
join the Navy in 1952, where he spent five years in active service and
two years in the Reserves where he taught radar to recruits in
Toronto. His stories were endless and always
funny.
After this he found his calling, where his charm and
personality led him into sales. He honed his craft for many years in
real estate and insurance, until he finally settled in as a
manufacturer’s agent in the Canadian ladies fashion
industry, where he excelled and supported his family in fine
style.
A huge change to Don’s life happened in 1979, with
a massive heart attack at the Moncton airport. Had it not
been for a timely premonition which led to a phone call to paramedics
in advance, Don would have died before he boarded his flight.
That day changed his life forever, and he never truly
recovered, health-wise.
Despite this setback, and the numerous that followed, Don
never lost his smile, sense of humour nor his ability to always
consider his impact on others and his concern to not be a burden.
Even when be put onto a stretcher for an ambulance ride, Don
would offer a joke, a smile or a friendly comment.
An active member of various local clubs, including The Elks,
Airforce, Legion and Boishebert, Don was never shy to enjoy his social
time. He was well-known to share jokes and laughs.
His smile was always large and real. Just as real
was his ability to speak his mind. It was well known amongst
many that if Don was not happy with you, you would know
it.
After vacationing with his beloved wife down south, and in
Florida, Don eventually spent his final travelling years visiting his
son, Drew, in Victoria, BC, staying there for 3-4 months each year.
While there, they both connected with new friends at the
Legion in Sidney, BC and got to connect with the abundant nature that
the west-coast provides.
Don will be missed by his wife Greta (Matchett), daughter
Jill (Kevin), son Drew. Grandchildren included Jill’s
children, Angela and Adam (and wife Landra) Myles and
great-grandson Hudson. While we are all very sad he his
gone, his character, charm and wit will live on. Dad was 86
and lived a good and full life.
There will be a celebration of Don’s life at
Cobb’s Funeral Home, 330 Whitepine Road, Riverview
(869-2007) Sunday June 27th, from 2-4pm. A Royal Canadian
Legion Branch #6 will hold a memorial service at 1:45 pm at the
funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to your local
SPCA in Don’s name would be humbly appreciated. Online
condolences may be expressed at www.cobbsfuneralhome.ca
