Donald Joseph Hughes
July 19, 1942 – June 08, 2021

Donald Joseph Hughes, 78, passed away peacefully on June 8th, 2021, at his home in Halifax. Born July 19th, 1942, in Saint John, New Brunswick to the late Donald C. Hughes and Dorothy E. Hughes (Nickerson). He married the love of his life, the former, Nancy C. Hughes (O’Rourke) in June of 1967, and they shared 37 beautiful years together.
Donnie was a welder by trade and worked as a car painter at Demone Motors and Wolf Collision until his retirement in 2008. After his retirement he continued to visit his buddies at Wolf Collision a few times a year to catch up on everything. He was an enthusiastic outdoors-man and loved to hunt and fish in his younger years. He and Nancy loved to laugh together and enjoyed country and western music and were avid wrestling fans. He missed his wife very much and would say hi to her every time he passed the cemetery where her grave was located. He was looking forward to being with her again. He loved his cars having worked with them his whole career. His favorite car was the 1963 Ford Galaxie 500, he had a poster of a red one pinned to the wall. He loved to drive and was very hesitant to put a wheelchair parking pass in his vehicle, until he realized that he could drive more places on his own with the pass than before he had it. He drove his car for the last time just a few days before his death to keep the battery charged. He was always making sure he asked how you liked your car? Was it running well? Is all the maintenance up to date? As a passenger he made sure he told you the best routes to take to avoid traffic and he always knew what lane you should be traveling in. He was a nice man, who had a dry sense of humor and a kind heart. He had a bit of a sweet tooth and he especially liked Werther’s original candies and Reece’s peanut butter cups. He was always willing to help someone less fortunate than himself, or someone that was down on their luck.
Donnie will be dearly missed by his only sister, Doreen Power, (Gordon), and nieces Donna Buckland and Sharon Johns who helped care for him the past few years, so he was able to continue living independently in his own home. As well as niece Terri-Lyn Rhyno, and nephew Tim Power. Donnie will be missed greatly, by his good friends Gordon and Norma Jenkins of Halifax, who he cherished dearly. Donnie was very appreciative of his close neighbourhood friends who always went out of their way to look out for him.
His family would like to thank the many professionals that helped care for him in the past few years, especially Dr. Mark Stender and his team who were always so kind to him. The crew at Joseph Howe Shoppers Drug Mart who always looked after all his prescriptions and medical questions with such grace. The staff at the QE2 hospital and the Abby J. Lane Hospital where he stayed a few times over the past few years and as recently as a month ago.
