We, the family of Donald Gregory O’Toole, regret to announce his passing on Sunday, September 19, 2021, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born January 11, 1937, in Louisbourg, he was the son of the late Donald Vincent and Catherine C. (Price) O’Toole.
Greg is survived by his sister, Catherine “Kay” Grace (Frank Cash), Sydney; brothers, Leonard (Janet), Truro, Ernest (Doreen), Halifax and Roderick “Roddie” (Sophie), Sydney; nieces, Cathy, Patty, Anita, Lorena, Colleen and Maureen; nephews, Vincent, Darrin, Dennis, Gerald, Jeff, Robert, Terrence and Gerard; and numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Greg was predeceased by his brothers, Vincent and Dennis; twin brothers in infancy; sister-in-law, Joan O’Toole; and brother-in-law, Bernard Grace.
Moving from Louisbourg to Sydney, then to Halifax, Greg spent many of his working days as a truck driver. As Greg would say, “There aren’t too many places I haven’t been.”
Greg was also fortunate to have travelled throughout Canada, USA, and beyond, and he enjoyed these adventures immensely. The twinkle in his eye was ever present, as Greg had a great sense of humor. This sense of humor was easily brought to life while teasing his nieces and nephews, to the point they all remember it well.
Greg’s last move was to Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home in Halifax. This is where he called home, where he was blessed with new friendships. His most recent trip to Cape Breton was to be his last, where he received not only care, but kindness in the hospital ER, CCU, and Palliative Care; we know he was grateful.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, Sydney. Funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Joe MacKenzie officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date.
Family flowers only. Memorials may be made to the AnCala, Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
