Obituary
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Donald Black on Feb.23, 2021 at the age of 86 years.
He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Donna Black, Sharon Neufeld (Dennis), Gwen Stewart (David) and Cheryl Black; cherished grandchildren and their families Roxanne (Nick), Kayla (John), Samantha (Pierre), Kristen (Chris), Morianna; step grandchildren Kristin (Dave) and Rory (Lauren); 6 adorable great grandsons; brother-in-law Don (Donna); sisters-in-law Joan and Donna (Peter), and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Don was predeceased by Elaine, his wife of 65 years; children Linda and Gordon; siblings Walter, Mae, Peggy, Grace, Ann, Cliff, and John; and parents Sandy and Hattie Black.
He was raised in the small towns of Solsgirth and Foxwarren then moved to Birtle where he and Elaine raised their family. Although they later moved to Portage La Prairie (for 39 years) and spent the last year of his life in Yorkton, Sk., Birtle was his home in his heart.
Don had a love of cars, working as a journeyman auto mechanic in various capacities over the years. For a few years Don and Elaine ventured into the small business Imperial Oil. While busy providing for and raising their family he enjoyed participating in the flying, curling, gun and Lions club. Once retired, they were able to travel with family and friends to Alaska, United States, and all over Canada. A favorite was to attend many curling events which later in life were to be enjoyed in front of the tv. He had a secret passion of being a farmer which started as a young boy picking stones and tending the animals and came full circle driving a tractor during the fall in his retirement years. He and Elaine spent many summers at Pyotts West campground, a spot loved by both. He loved to fish, had many ‘fishing stories’, and many fond memories of times shared at Pyotts with friends and family. He was known for having the gift of joke and storytelling and being a straight shooter so one always knew exactly what he was thinking and feeling. He would break out in song and funny little ditties entertaining all. He loved playing cards especially crib first thing in the morning with Elaine, loved a good laugh, but above all, loved his family.
His 86 years saw many changes from ice boxes in the ground to internet and Facebook and he embraced them all. His life was rich and full. He will be sorely missed.
A celebration of life event will take place at a later date.
For those who wish, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.
