Born June 1st, 1949 in Yarmouth, NS to John Melbourne Deveau and Yvonne Margaret (nee Thibault) of Salmon River, he passed away peacefully in Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief battle with cancer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Elsie (nee Martell) of L’Ardoise, daughter Roselle (Tim Doyle) Grande Prairie, Alberta, son Gregory (Leah Curtis) L’Ardoise, and his beloved grandsons James and David, Grande Prairie. He is also survived by his lifelong friend Alfred Comeau (Gail) who’s friendship he treasured.
Delbert came from a family of fishermen and fished with his father at Cape St. Mary’s in Mavillette, NS. His first love was the ocean and he fondly recounted his days of youth working aboard The Bluenose Ferry between Yarmouth and Maine.
He attended post secondary schooling at Universite Sainte-Anne and attained his teaching degree from St. Mary’s University. Monsieur Deveau moved to L’Ardoise, NS and taught throughout Richmond County, ending his teaching career teaching high school french at SPDH until his retirement in 2006. Upon retirement he travelled throughout Europe and spent his free time working with his brother-in-law Victor at the sawmill building sheds, working on his property and gardens and baking bread and sweets in his kitchen.
Grand-pere loved spending time with his grandsons James and David, and regularly visited with them or brought them to Nova Scotia for the beautiful summers. Staying active right up to his sickness, he always had wonderful times with his best buddies on his 4-wheeler and experienced a second wave of youth when they visited.
A quiet and thoughtful man who wanted nothing more than his family by his side. We will dearly miss you.
