Obituary
David Gordon MacKerricher passed away in Kelowna, BC on September 15, 2021, at age 78 after a short but very courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Souris, PEI in 1948 and he and his mother moved from PEI to BC in July of 1946, first settling in Britannia Beach, BC, then to Mission, BC until the great flood of the Fraser River in June 1948.
From there they moved to Victoria until late 1948, where his mother re-married.
David spent the most of his career in the construction industry building air terminal buildings, hydro projects, pulp mills and mining projects throughout the world.
He loved sailing his 40-foot motor-launch boat with friends and he spent many hours on the road in his motorhome, showing friends and family around this beautiful province.
He was a keen golfer, and he also had a special interest in fly-fishing at Tunkwa Lake, where he had a summer camp for many years. It was there that Kristin (his eldest daughter) became a specialist in not only fly- fishing but fly-tying. It was a pleasure watching her cast a fly and catch fish for dinner! Kimberly (his youngest daughter) spent some of her time serenading the camp by playing the flute while at the camp or out on the water!
Everybody who met David – loved him. He was a social butterfly and business mentor to many.
Despite not being able to talk for the last 6 months because of throat cancer, he still managed to have a cheeky sense of humour – even if he had to write it on his “talking board” to his nurses and me!
David will be sorely missed by his family: his life partner June, his daughters Kimberly and Kristin, his grand-daughter Olivia, his sisters Lorna and Mary, his brothers Howard and Robert and Charmaine, the mother of his daughters.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the love and care that the nurses and caregivers at Kelowna Hospice House extended to David in his last few days. A special thanks to Tavey, one of the night nurses and her little Havanese dog Teddy. Teddy visited and sat on David’s bed on Tuesday night with him before David died and again early Wednesday morning before Tavey went off shift. It was so wonderful to see the smile on David’s face! I spent my last night with him in a cot beside his bed. The nurses were all so caring. Thank you Kelowna Hospice House! He was in a beautifully calm and comfortable place when he took is last breath surrounded by his loved ones.
