Obituary of Darren Joseph Drinovz, Sydney River/New Waterford
The family of Darren Joseph Drinovz of Sydney River regret to announce his unexpected passing on October 20, 2021.
Darren was born on May 18, 1965 in Antigonish, to parents Carl and Shirley Drinovz.
From an early age, Darren had an interest in the outdoors. He was a Boy Scout and later a member of the Sea Cadets where he made many friendships while attending summer camps. He also played golf, tennis, hockey and baseball as a youth and was a lifelong Toronto Blue Jays fan.
After attending Breton Education Center, Darren graduated from the Atlantic Police Academy in the officer training program and joined the New Waterford Police Department in 1985 and later the CBRM as a constable. He received many commendations and achievements in this capacity and was highly regarded. “Double D” spent time in East, Central and North divisions and accepted these postings with vigor, received extensive training and thrived on being challenged.
Darren was a member of the Coxheath Fire Department for a few years, where he enjoyed serving his community. He had special friends at a weekly poker game and enjoyed the camaraderie. He was a lover of animals and always had a dog by his side. He will be missed by “Charlie”. He enjoyed nature and his residence in Sydney River gave him a closeness to this which he relished. He liked tinkering in the garage and being a mechanics assistant. Most of all, Darren loved family gatherings and always looked forward to these events.
Darren was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Shirley and sister, Lynn.
He is survived by his sister, Carol Ann, Kitchener, Ont.; brothers, Walter (Rosemary), Dartmouth, Andrew, Rothesay, NB, David (Tarryn), Lingan and Robert (Bernadette), New Waterford. He will be missed deeply by his nieces, Jackie and Dana Robertson, Carly Clark (Ben)and nephews, Matthew and Mitchell Drinovz whom he loved to spoil and loved dearly. He also had a special fondness for his great-nieces Evony, Janaya and Cali and nephew, Lino.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown, with Father Peter McLeod officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Shelter, Nova Scotia SPCA or a charity of choice. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
