Kicipihisiwiyin
Chief Thunderbird
April 22, 1959 – October 23, 2021
Darcy Lee Soosay was the youngest son of late Pierre Soosay & Louisa Firingstoney. He was born on Wednesday April 22, 1959. As a child he wore braids and had a desire to work on the work crew for packing hay with his family. He attended day school in Ermineskin Residential School. He was very close to his mother and talked about their garden, work camps at farmers fields in Edmonton and south of Red Deer and his mother’s cooking. His father was a strong man and taught him about horses. As a young adult he worked for CP Rail. He met Betty Saddleback at the 5-mile Saddleback farm. He was married on February 14, 1981. They were married for 40 years. One of his nicknames fondly remembered by all was, “the toughest man in Samson”. He loved to travel with his wife and children to the USA, to the mountains and with his friends on long drives. He was a prayerful, punctual and clean man. He was a man of few words and loved to listen to music. His Indigenous name was Kicipihisiwiyin, Chief Thunderbird, a name he was proud of. His grandchildren gave him the greatest joy. He will be dearly missed.
Darcy is survived by his youngest daughter Cora Cathryn Louise Soosay, husband Asa Applegarth & children: (Elizabeth, Acelynn, Dimitri, Malayah, Cassara, Coryssa & Trinity); youngest son Christopher Glenn Soosay & children: (Tyrece, Christopher Jr., common Law Shania & daughter Shayla, Dre & daughter Cassie & Destiny Soosay, fiancé Garret Saddleback & children Braxton, Myles, Brody & Sapphire); oldest son Herman Patrick Soosay, wife Tammy Raine & children: (Neisha, Ashton & Latisha, stepchildren Loewen, Hope & Brannon); oldest daughter Stephanie Rae Charmaine Soosay and adopted daughter Danette Ryder & family; his brother Darwin & Gladys Soosay children: (Tressa, Shireen, Timmy, Tara & Craig) and his sister Catherine Saddleback and son Trevor Saddleback.
