1932 – 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing in his home at The Royale in Kingston in his 89th year, on Wednesday February 10th, 2021. Colin was predeceased by his beloved wife Joan (nee Wood) – Married 62 years. Loving father of David (Wendy), Kim (Tracy) Joanne Birkas (nee Cherry) (George) and Cheryl-Ann (deceased). Cherished Grandfather to Alana Ray (Dan), James (Catherine), Carolyn Ropp (Bryan), Matthew (Rachel), Michelle Cherry (Matt), Kevin (Casey), Colin Birkas (Kiley), Chris Birkas (Cathy) and Katie Birkas, as well as 20 great-grandchildren who will all dearly miss him. Predeceased by his parents Vera (Frizzell) and Truman Cherry, brother Doug and sister Dianne Campbell.
Colin had two work careers. First for 27 years he was a very proud and dedicated member of the Canadian Armed Forces serving RCEME and he was a life member and a Past President of the RCEME Association. In his second career he worked diligently for DACON Corporation as a Vice-President for 25 years. He was also a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 560.
Colin was born and raised in Kingston and always supported the community such as the Kingston General Hospital.
Interment will be held at the Cataraqui Cemetery on the 20th of February 2021 with close family attending and RCEME Padre Don Chisholm officiating.
The family would like to expressly thank all the staff at The Royale for the fantastic personal care that he received in making his passing comfortable. In addition, Dr. Andrew Ross, the many health professionals at Kingston General and Hotel Dieu Hospitals and David Graham and staff at Graham Pharmacy and staff at Merry Foot Clinic for the years of care they provided Colin.
