COLEMAN, Jean Lorraine
1952 – 2021
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jean (Jeannie) Lorraine Coleman (nee Sharun) on May 11th, 2021 at the age of 68. Jean will be lovingly remembered by her husband Lorne; her children Nicole (Ali), Dwayne (Tanya); stepdaughters Lori (Bryan), Jamie (Bryan); her nine grandchildren Emmett, Greydon, Noah, William, Emma, Dane, Isaac, Emmett, Summer and her brothers Donald, Dean (Rita) and Michael (Natalie). Her fur baby Molly will miss all the extra treats and cuddles from her too!
Jean was predeceased by her beloved younger sister Sandi, her parents John and Marion, her sister-in-law Lorna and her special Auntie Harriet.
Jean was born in Tofield, Alberta and grew up mainly in Edmonton, Alberta. While in school she studied to be a Beautician and although she never worked professionally in this field, she continued cutting hair for a select few her entire life. Around 1970 she met Wayne Rentz and they were married in 1973. They had two children together (Nicole and Dwayne) and for the next 13 years they moved around Alberta including Edmonton, Barrhead, Grimshaw, Athabasca, Fort McMurray and then to Stony Plain where they remained for several years. Jean and Wayne went their separate ways around 1989.
Around 1998 Jean met Lorne and they married on May 5th, 2006. Lorne loved Jean to the fullest and was a committed partner through all the years they knew each other. In 2014 they moved to Hinton where they resided for about 11 years. During this time, Jean worked Safeway, Scotia Bank and Shoppers Drug Mart. Finally in 2015 she convinced her husband to ‘retire’ and they moved from Hinton and they spent the next several years primarily at Island View RV Resort in Osoyoos, BC. Neither Jean or Lorne ever really retired (as they loved to keep busy) and they continued to work at Island View and Jean also worked on occasion with AG Foods and Pharmasave. These were some of the best years of her life and she loved her extended family at Island View. Her grandchildren (and children) loved going to visit Grandma and Grandpa in Osoyoos and it wasn’t only for all the ice cream, chocolates and candy that Grandma would give them! There are many wonderful descriptions that you could use for Jean, but one stands out the most which would be her generosity. Jean was often buying gifts for her family and friends. Those that knew her were aware of her love of shopping! Jean was also an organizer and if there was some occasion to celebrate, she was the best person to plan the perfect get together.
Sadly, on April 5th, 2021 Jean suddenly experienced some medical issues and over the next several weeks her health declined dramatically as she was diagnosed with Glioblastoma. She was aware of what was happening and her wish was to come ‘back home’ and be with her kids. This happened as her son Dwayne made the trek and drove his mom to Alberta to stay with her daughter Nicole until Lorne could return with their 5th wheel and they would be united again. Unfortunately, due to a deterioration in her health she was taken to hospital a couple of days later and spent over a week at the University of Alberta Hospital. On May 11th, Jean passed away at Westview Continuing Care Hospice in Stony Plain with Lorne and Nicole near her.
For those that had the pleasure to know her, there are many memories that will come to mind when thinking of Jean. These are just some of the descriptions that her grandchildren said when describing ‘Grandma Coleman’, ‘Grandma Jean’ or ‘Jazzy Grandma’: loving, pretty, thoughtful, kind, jazzy, funny, happy, giving, caring, fancy and generous.
The family would like to thank all the beautiful and generous Staff at Westview Continuing Care Hospice for their compassion, love and dignity that they demonstrated to Jean and the family in the last 8 days of Jean’s life. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date for close family and friends at the Tofield Cemetery.
