Clarence (Con) John Pike (born October 5, 1932) passed peacefully at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre on August 6, 2021, with his wife of 68 years, Margaret, by his side. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to all who knew him.
Con is survived by his children Randy of Nova Scotia, Patricia (John Mayo) of Burin, Roger (Nora) of St. Lawrence, John of Pembroke, ON, Perry (Christina) of Oakville, ON, Jennifer of Newmarket, ON; and sister Evelyn Hunt of Nova Scotia. His many grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remember their “poppy” fondly, and a large network of nieces, nephews and friends will hold “Uncle Con” in their hearts.
Con was predeceased by his parents William and Lucy; his sisters Helen Edwards, Maime Tobin, Francis Hillier; his parents-in-law Charles and Blanche (Emma) Pike; sisters-in law Stella Grandy, Lucy Fredricks, Betty Rockett, Linda Low; and his brothers-in-law Jack Pike and Levi Pike.
Born in Herring Cove, St. Lawrence, Con began working at the age of eleven to support his mother and siblings, and the work didn’t stop until well into his golden years. He worked tirelessly as a miner and fisherman throughout his life to build a home for his family.
When he wasn’t working, Con was still fishing. He taught his grandsons to cast a bamboo pole, he dragged a canoe through the woods – even with two fake knees – and there was always a scoff of fish on the table. A lifelong outdoorsman, Con enjoyed hunting many species of wildlife, berry picking of all kinds, and the St. Lawrence Laurentians Soccer Team.
Con’s work extended to his home, where many of the rooms were updated and built by his own hand. The house – a hub of Pike family gatherings – is filled with wonderful memories of his warm smile, happy laugh, and strong bear hugs. It is here that Con spent his final weeks, surrounded by those who loved him most.
In following Con’s wishes cremation has taken place and a funeral service will be held at a later time.
To honor Con’s memory in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, St. Lawrence.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Wiseman’s Funeral Homes – Marystown.
