Chiye (Cathy) Yanoshita (nee Fujimoto) was born on May 4, 1920 in Pitt Meadows B.C. to Hidehiko and Momi Fujimoto. She passed away peacefully on February 03, 2021 in her home at Shepherd Lodge. She was predeceased by her brothers Kunihide (1945) and Susumu (1992) and is survived by her sister Miye (Roy).
Her family owned a strawberry farm in Pitt Meadows but after war broke out they were forcibly relocated and interned in Letelier, Manitoba. Chiye worked on a sugar beet farm there and also as a housekeeper.
She married Tatsuo in 1946 and later moved to Chatham, Ontario and then to downtown Toronto in 1954. She is survived by her children Diane (Ted) and Ed (Jane); her grandchildren, Laura (Eric), Matthew (Neda), Colleen (Paul); step-grandchildren Emily and Gregory; and great grandchildren, Dashiell, Magnus and Arveen. Chiye was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Most of her working career was spent with the T. Eaton Co., first in the Customer Services Department at the Eaton’s College St. Store and later in the women’s accessories department at the Eaton Centre location. She received many commendations for her exceptional customer service. Chiye retired from Eatons at age 75.
Chiye was a skilled dressmaker who made all of her own clothes. She also enjoyed reading romance novels, cooking, hosting family dinners, knitting, crocheting and gardening. She was active in her church. Chiye cherished her Japanese culture and heritage as well as being a proud Canadian. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. Her kind heart and generous spirit leave a lasting memory.
Due to Covid restrictions, a Celebration of Life is planned for the fall. If desired, donations may be made in Chiye’s memory to the Japanese Cultural Centre or the Momiji Health Care Society.
