Charles Patrick Martyn 2021

Charles Patrick Martyn
September 08, 1941 – October 21, 2021

Charles Patrick Martyn, aged 80 years, passed away peacefully at St. Clare’s Hospital on October 21, 2021. Charles was born September 8, 1941 in Corner Brook, NL to Charles and Margaret Martyn (nee Griffin). Family was everything to Charles. Charles (Poppa) deeply loved his wife of over 54 years, Sheila Martyn (nee O’Neill), his 2 sons, Charles (Chuck) Martyn (Susan) and Daniel Martyn, (Liv Terese) and his 5 beautiful grandchildren, Daniel, Aaron, Nathan, Hanz and Freya; and in them his spirit lives on. He was a loving uncle to many wonderful nieces and nephews and the oldest of nine. Charles was predeceased by his sisters, Connie and Kay.
Charles spoke fondly of his childhood days swimming at Cooks Brook, summers at Pasadena beach, time spent with his Grandparents at their fishing lodge in Stephenville Crossing and time spent with Pop Griffin working on boats and woodworking projects. He loved sailboats and deeply cherished the times sailing with his good friend Rob and his brother Scott. After a sail he would describe his experience so vividly you couldn’t help but feel his passion.
Charles dearly loved his wife, Sheila, and they enjoyed family vacations and travel. Charles loved the beach; drives on sunny days, time with family and couldn’t wait to watch Survivor together with Sheila (never missed a season). He loved to cook and was a good cook – if a steak was done any way other than rare then it was a crime (cleanup however wasn’t his forte).
Charles was the best Dad. Not a day went by that he didn’t tell you that he loved you, followed with a hug and embrace like no other. Mom always said he could “put an ass in a cat” and was always helping his family. He designed and built every family home and lent a hand and his expertise on countless others. His ability to envision and plan a project in his head was truly awe-inspiring and for those of us without his gift, sometimes frustrating. When Charles could no longer swing the hammer, he was there to advise and provide direction – he loved to wear the white hat. He had a love and understanding of architecture more than most and appreciated fine art.
Charles had a creative, talented and curious mind and was filled with wonderment, passion and above all LOVE. Charles, Dad, Poppa was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure. He will be forever in our memories and our hearts. He gave selflessly and quietly and would have much preferred a donation to the Gathering Place than flowers. The family sends a special thank you to the 7 West nurses at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care.
To quote Dad, “Don’t worry, live a good life!”
Visitation is at Caul’s Funeral Home, at 84 LeMarchant Road in St. John’s, from 12-4 pm on Sunday, October 24th. This will be followed by a private event for family only and close friends.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Charles Patrick Martyn 2021..
