Caroline’s Obituary
Richter, Caroline Joan – Age 76 of Meadowvale Annapolis Co., It is with broken hearts, the family announce her sudden passing on ThursdayFebruary 25, 2021 at the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville, Nova Scotia.
Mom was born on July 7, 1944 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and was the daughter of Joseph Patrick Ward and Catherine Ella Ward (nee Boucher). Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Alfred, Dallas, Billy and Tommy; sisters Patsy, Margaret, Dolly, Jean and Rita.
She is survived by her loving and devoted partner of 38 years, Bert Clayton; her son Paul Richter (Shari) of Middleton, NS; daughter Kim Richter (Sherman) of Saint John, NB; step-daughter Claire Clayton of Middleton, NS; her grandchildren Cameron and Cara McCurdy, Isaac and Ava Richter, Addyson Mappleback; Tyler and Maggie Peters; sisters Darlene Mattes (Ken) of Winnipeg and Judy Schofield (Otis) of Berwick; brother Patrick Ward (Jan) of Portage La Prairie and sisters-in-law Shelley Clayton of Fredericton and Wanda Seely of Amherst as well as nieces, nephews and cousins too many to mention, both in Canada and in the UK. She loved each and every one of you.
Mom also had several friends who were like family to her (her “twisted family”). She enjoyed their campouts and their country jams, playing cards and knocking back a few cherry brandies and coolers. She loved playing her mandolin, guitar and spoons and dressing up to make people laugh at the jams. I never knew my mother was the life of the party until I attended some of these camp outs. Mom had a busier social life than we did, was like a mother to so many and she loved each and every one of you.
In her earlier years, Mom was active in sports including 5-pin bowling, lawn bowling, curling and darts. She held various jobs throughout the years, was known to make a mean batch of cinnamon rolls and biscuits and volunteered tirelessly in her community. She was honoured with a lifetime membership at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 98 and volunteered there in several capacities. She loved going to the camp in Wentworth NS with Bert and hosting friends there especially during hunting season.
Mom was a “tell it like it is” person; she was opinionated and if you asked her for advice, it may not be what you wanted to hear, but she loved you enough to tell you what she felt was the truth. She was fun loving and feisty, she was strong-willed and stubborn, she had a wicked sense of humor and she was thoughtful and loving. She was perfectly imperfect. Her greatest source of pride were her children and grandchildren. She was also a hugger. She hugged you hello, and she hugged you goodbye, no matter the occasion, no matter the person.
Having lived in Nova Scotia most of her life, Mom greatly missed her family in Manitoba, especially her sister Darlene (whom she affectionately called “baby girl”) and made several extended visits when her health permitted. While there, she volunteered with the First Nations community and rediscovered her native culture and anishnabe self. She finally attained her native status only 6 months ago after 20+ years of applying, a wrong that was finally made right with the tireless assistance of her niece, Dr. Cathy Mattes. As a result, she became a registered member of Sandy Bay First Nation in Manitoba and was very proud of her native heritage.
The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, lab assistants and caregivers who cared for her over the past several years during Mom’s many health issues. Cremation has taken place and we will be bringing Mom home to Portage la Prairie for interment with her family when travel is permitted.
