Carol Alice Ramsay, age 75, of Waskada, beloved wife to the late Vaughn Ramsay,
and loving mother to Clair and Carl, passed away peacefully in the early hours of
Sunday, March 7th, at the Virden Medical Centre in Virden, Manitoba.
Carol was born in Port Arthur, Ontario, June 26th, 1945, daughter to the late Emil
and Alice Berglund. Emil was a “railroad man”, and Carol, along with her younger
sister, Elaine, moved wherever their father’s work took them, with stops in
Gillam, Churchill, and The Pas along the way.
Carol had an interest, as well as a talent, in art from an early age, once winning a
regional newspaper’s art contest, as an 8 year old, for her picture of a train. Carol
and her sister were each other’s best and only friends, as they were
homeschooled by Alice until Carol was in grade 6.
After high school, Carol began studying Sciences at St. John College in Winnipeg
and soon met the love of her life, Vaughn Ramsay. Vaughn was studying
Agriculture at the U of M, and the two met at a university dance. It must have
been a whirlwind romance as they were quickly engaged and soon married in
1964.
As a farmer’s wife in Waskada, Carol worked hard, driving trucks, operating farm
machinery, and soon raising two young sons, Clair (1970), and Carl (1973). Life on
the farm was challenging in those early days. Carol sewed most of her children’s
clothing and had to wash clothes using a ringer washer with no hot water.
In 1980, Carol and Vaughn concluded they weren’t getting rich on the farm, so
they decided to rent out the land and take their family to the Bahamas for a few
months. Carol enjoyed the escape from Manitoba’s harsh winter, with frequent
trips to the beach instead of the hockey rink.
When they returned, Carol worked at Griffith Agencies and later the Waskada Coop store. She also became more active with the Waskada United Church.
Throughout the 80s and 90s, Carol’s art career blossomed. She became involved
in the Manitoba Art Council’s Artist in the Schools program, teaching art to
children in schools all over Manitoba. She opened an Art Studio in Waskada, and
exhibited her work locally, provincially, and in neighbouring provinces. In 1994,
she was invited to create two large outdoor murals in Boissevain, which can still
be enjoyed today.
Carol and Vaughn entered a new era of their lives in the 2000s when they became
proud grandparents to three grandsons, David, Nathan, and Ethan. Carol loved
being a gramma, spending time doing art projects, playing games, and sometimes
even golfing with them.
As retired empty nesters, Carol and Vaughn began spending their winters in
Mesquite, Nevada, and also enjoyed a European trip together in 2012, with time
spent in France and Italy.
In 2014, Carol and Vaughn were involved in a tragic car accident which sadly took
Vaughn’s life, beginning another chapter. Carol had reconnected with her high
school friend, Gladys Millar, and Gladys, along with her husband, David, invited
her to begin joining them in Texas for their winter escapes. Carol also became
closer with her sister, Elaine, and husband, Cliff, who lived in nearby Rocanville,
SK. Giggling whenever they talked, just as they did when they were young girls.
To those who knew her, Carol will be remembered as a kind, funny, caring, and
beautifully creative person. She will be so dearly missed.
A private celebration of Carol’s life will be held in Waskada at a date to be
determined
